Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This unique resource gives teachers and supervisors in extended day programs a store of high-quality yet easy-to-do activities that are both challenging and relaxing for children. The 200 activities included are so clearly presented that many students can complete them independently. Moreover, they will help you give children a choice of activities, which is particularly important after school.

For easy selection and use, all of these ready-to-use activities are organized into six sections and printed in a bit 8-1/2" x 11" format for photocopying of the directions pages. The six sections include:

I. Arts and Crafts?37 stimulating projects covering a wide range of creative media, including painting, cutting, collage construction, sandcasting, sculpture, printing, weaving, puppet-making, and more.

II. Indoor and Outdoor games?44 active or quiet games, including language games, ball bouncing, rope jumping, relays, and favorite group games such as ?Man from Mars,? ?Indian Ball,? and ?Mouse Trap.?

III. Songs and Fingergames?38 child-tested favorites or originals, such as ?Wiggle-Waggle,? ?Hand Jive Routines,? ?Riddle Song,? ?Barnyard Song,? and ?I Am Special.?

IV. Science and Nature?21 unforgettable projects that are easy to do, for example, constructing an incubator for hatching eggs, creating musical instruments, and building three different types of bird feeders.

V. Health Snacks?35 snacks children can prepare cooperatively while expanding their arithmetic skills ad nutrition facts, for example, ?Banana Boats,? ?Peanut Butter Reindeer,? ?Sandwich Cut-Outs,? and ?Fruit Kabobs.?

VI. Special Activities?25 humorous stories to act out, filmstrip and slide shows, card games with regular cards, and useful knots.?

The age range for each activity is indicated in the Table of Contents and on the activity directions page, except when the activity may be applicable for all ages, such as snack preparation and songs. Many projects reach upwards to grades 5 and 6 (ages 11 or 12). Most of the projects and activities may be used in mixed age groups, or by one or two children alone. (The teacher should use her/his judgment as to which children can work independently.)

These stimulating games, projects, and activities can help create a well-rounded and inviting extended day program whether it be in a school setting, a day care center, or at home. The activities are also suitable for use with Scout groups and in summer camp, family day care, and recreational programs.
