Book Description

Fresh out of college, Aggie Milliken thinks she's prepared for anything life can throw her way. Think again, Aggie!

After the abrupt loss of her sister and brother-in-law, Aggie is stunned to find herself the sole guardian of their eight lively children. If learning basic parenting skills wasn't complicated enough, she must also battle the children's half-crazed grandmother, survive a massive remodeling project, and navigate the waters of new friendships-alone.

She has little experience with children and none with housekeeping, and it shows. What she has going for her is grit, a double dose of determination, and the confidence that this is exactly where the Lord wants her to be. With an unlimited P-mail account and enough hymns to keep her spirits bolstered, she tackles one catastrophe after another.

It seems like nothing Aggie does is right, but ready or not, here she comes!

4.0 out of 5 stars Aggie: Fun, Encouraging, Enjoyable June 29, 2012
By E. Dell
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ready Or Not? After reading this book you'll be "ready"--ready to read the next two books in Aggie's saga! Aggie is in an overwhelming position--suddenly thrust into enormous responsibilities, overwhelming chaos, and stirrings of maternal love. Embarking on a journey beyond anything she ever imagined, she realistically struggles, but never despairs entirely. Aggie, the children, and the neighbors are all painted with honesty, insight, depth, humanity, and fun. As each character grapples with abruptly altered circumstances, they grow, learn, fumble, and get up again. Wit, even amid hard and tragic circumstances, sets this book apart from the masses of "inspirational" novels.

I laughed, sighed, and groaned and rejoiced with this family. Most importantly, Ready Or Not provided good brain-food about human nature, and my own heart. I'll not soon forget Aggie, for like all characters worth meeting, she's shown me aspects of myself, yet simultaneously opened my eyes beyond myself. The wisdom, humor, and capable writing style in the Aggie series have me eagerly awaiting more by this author.

A note about my ratings: I'm a teacher; As my students will attest, I have a tough grading scale. Only the "best of the best" receive a perfect score. For Amazon reviews, this means that I reserve 5 stars for the most exceptional literature--Milton, Shakespeare, The Chronicles of Narnia and the like. I consider 2.5 stars to be "average ho-hum", and 4 stars to be "Well above average, enjoyable, well-written, and containing a special something that draws me to another place and time." As a 4 star book in my rating, this book was not among the greatest ever written. It was, however, a lovely read, enriching, and time well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Family. Big Chaos. Big Story. June 25, 2012
Format:Paperback
I've been wanting to read some of Chautona Havig's books for quite awhile, but just hadn't gotten around to it. When I read the preview pages of "For Keeps", the second in the Aggie series, I knew that this was the series to start with. That book opens with a scene where Aggie gains complete control of her children with one word. At the time, I was struggling with my own kiddos and thought that perhaps I could learn something by reading this series. I wasn't disappointed.

Aggie's sister and husband die and leave their 8 children to their very young aunt. The story of how Aggie and the children journey through grief and embrace a new, and completely foreign life is charming and sometimes heartbreaking. The characters are fun and pretty true to life, including the naughty little child that cannot be left to herself without causing serious destruction. You'll find yourself rooting for Aggie and the kids and even sighing in empathy when pandemonium hits the Stuart-Miliken house.

Mrs.Havig has written an excellent book that captures the fun and chaos of large family life and weaves nuggets of parenting wisdom throughout. If you want a chance to sit and enjoy an entertaining novel, then grab this book. Don't be surprised if you look at the world a little differently when you are done, because this is way more than "just" a novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grab a snack when you start reading.... June 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Because you will not want to put it down! Ready or Not is a beautiful and hilarious story of sacrifice. From the beginning, the characters will become like old friends. Chautona Havig does an amazing job of drawing you in to Aggie's story. Be warned...you will want the next two books in this series For Keeps and Here We Come.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm just glad I didn't pay money for this book July 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Honestly, I really wanted to like this book, was excited by all the rave reviews, and was seriously disappointed. It had a good premise, and started out alright, but that's the best I can say. It all went down hill from there. It's boring, repetitive drivel, there were tons of errors, the main character was rude, unlikable, and just weird. Many of the conversations made no sense and were painful to read. I can only assume the 5 star reviews this book received were created by friends and family of the author. Don't fall for it like I did. I'm just glad I "borrowed" it for free from the kindle library and didn't spend actual money on it. Otherwise I would have been pretty angry. As it is I'm angry enough this book makes Christians look really bad and borderline insane.

3.0 out of 5 stars Religious and preachy - but cute. June 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is Christian fiction. Not one reviewer mentioned that fact, so I was quite surprised by the overwhelming God factor. The author, a homeschooling mother of nine, never misses an opportunity to preach about correct child rearing techniques. I didn't mind a few of them, but it evolved to everything being a lesson.

The premise of the story was cute, and I finished the book purely to discover which perfect guy she ended up with. Alas, it's a trilogy - so I remain in the dark. I won't be reading the other books - not worth my time.

3.0 out of 5 stars so much potential! August 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book but....it went no where, slowly. Its a great premise, love the plot, love the characters, but it just seemed to plod along slowly, going no where, ending no where. I realize this is part one of a series, but the ending wasn't satisfactory for anything. Lots of potential, but fizzled. I'd love to re-red a well edited copy some day.

I had never read any of Chautona Havig's books, I was quite surprised with her ability to bring out the message through a great story. Throughout the story you can see how God uses people to do his will, by helping others and sacrificing for those you love. Building bonds and relationships are not always easy and you can feel the struggles of all the characters in the book. I loved this one so much I bought the other two in the series.

This is a fun to read book about a young girl whose life is thrown upside down and how she adapts. It does a good job of handling grief when you're too busy to mourn.

More About the Author

Chautona Havig began her love affair with words as a very young child. An early reader, she spent most of her childhood devouring books at the speed of a paper grocery bag full each week during summer vacation. Blessed with a vivid imagination, she often escaped into worlds of her own creation.

When asked about her first attempts at writing a novel, Chautona said, "The summer I turned thirteen, I wrote the most insipid, pietistic, self-righteous pile of wasted paper that anyone has ever attempted to put on paper. Looking back, I guess it was a good reminder of what I don't want to write! Twenty years later, in 2001, I suddenly felt compelled to write, and I haven't stopped since."

With over a hundred books in various stages of editing or completion and three in print, Chautona doesn't see herself ever running out of ideas.

Chautona strives to write about average people with genuine problems, and how they strive to live their lives to the glory of God. Some of their methods are unconventional and their situations aren't pristine and free from the taint of sin in this world, but all care more about serving the Lord and each other than obtaining some Utopian ideal.
