To me, this is one of the best albums i owned back in the day. as always with me i was looking for the good dance songs to play( being a DJ ) and i didn't really focus on the slow jams. i was djing a party and a girl came up and requested a slow song and i really didn't have a lot ...i looked at my Ready For the world album and just picked one...that was "slide over"...Wow!!! the floor was full of couples. i then took a good look and found out that the whole album was filled with great "baby making love songs". A Virgin type love letter in "tonight"..."you're more woman than i ever seen, girl tonight"...that was the cut back in the day!...Everybody has had an out of town lover and this song helped us thru the long phone calls and gave us a dedication to our Ladies.they were the kings of the slow jam but they really brought it with JAMS that will never die like "Oh Shiela" and the "Digital Display"..."i never had a girl before...with much of a figure"....The group followed up with a few more albums and Melvin Riley ( the groups lead singer ) tried a solo project but they never captured the same magic as this first album although the second album is very good. this album is a prime example of the 80's music we were listening to back in Santa Paula,Ca. slow jams and doing the slide step from the video oh shiela...those are my memories from this album...thanks guys.... JC Cota [...]IF U DON'T OWN THIS ALBUM...WHAT ARE U WAITING FOR ...!

I always caught myself rocking out when "Oh Sheila" happened to come on the radio, and I had to go out and find this album. Reminds me of Prince and Morris Day/The Time. Very funky and very retro. It's a blast.

When the Flint, Michigan natives hit national R&B radio stations in 1984 with the hit slow jam, "Tonight," it became the staple of many parties especially when it came to romance sneaking with the one you're dancing with. Along with Peabo Bryson's "If You're Ever In My Arms Again" and New Edition's "Lost In Love;" "Tonight" was the most popular R&B slow jam circa late 1984/early 1985. "Deep Inside You Love" was their next single and they debuted it on an episode of Soul Train in the spring of 1985. Both "Deep Inside Your Love" and "Tonight" peaked at #6 on the R&B charts before the debut album was ever released and both failed to reach the top 100 on the pop charts. By the late summer of 1985, Ready For The World released their biggest hit to date which is the Minneapolis pop/funk "jherri curl" jam, "Oh Shelia" of which topped both the pop, Hot Dance Club Play, and R&B charts. The single conceived them their first music video and its success prompted the band to release another pop/funk followup, "Digital Display" of which reached #4 on the R&B charts and just missing the top 20 on the pop charts (at #21). At the dawn of 1986, two more hot singles were released that fared even less on the R&B charts which are the funk-ballad, "Slide Over" and Jesse Johnson Revue influenced, "Ceremic Girl." A great R&B album does'nt come without very great fillers such as the album closer, "I'm the One who Loves You," which happens to be one of my favorite jams by the band and most underated. Melvin Riley and the gang had that untouchable swagger that influenced many African American late teen males in the mid-1980s with the jherri curls and cool suits, although simular bands like The Deele and Dreamboy came before them.Read more ›

Ready For The World's self-titled debut album is a treasure trove of mid-80's r&b classics. Even though the band is from Michigan, they mine the fertile Minneapolis sound of the era to great effect. Oh Sheila" is the most well known becoming the band's one and only number one single on the pop charts. The song is a rightful 80's classic with its snappy beat and catchy chorus. "Digital Display" has a heavy synth sound. "Tonight" is a ballad with a pop edge while "Deep Inside Your Love" is a straight power r&b ballad. "Slide Over" is a slow burner and "Ceramic Girl" is an up-tempo number with a kicking bass. Ready For The World experienced success after this album, but they were never better than here.

RFTW is neither watered-down Prince or Michael Jackson! These cats could do things that a lot of today's artists only wish they could; playing some good, soulful, ORIGINAL music and making it funky! If only we had a modern day equivalent to RFTW, we would have to put up with all this garbage music people are putting out! This album is very enjoyable, and brings back some good memories.

The track "Human Toy" was missing from this one...wtf? I would have given it a 4/5 if not for that. Get out your members-only jacket and get your dippity-do on; its 80's club music time.
