Editorial Reviews

Nils last album, Pacific Coast Highway catapulted him into the upper echelon of the smooth jazz genre with two #1 singles the little track and 'Summer Nights.' 'Ready to Play' is his follow-up release which is sure to be a fixture at radio throughout 2007. It's chock full of Nil' signature funky guitar grooves and radio friendly hooks. Nils' concert appearances have received rave reviews and created a legion of loyal fans worldwide.

I like Nils for a few reasons. First, he's got a little grit in his melodies, a little toughness, a little bit of bittersweet. In this area I'd compare him...favorably...to Larry Carlton. In many ways, this could be a tougher Fourplay album...think "Blues Force" from "Yes Please" as opposed to some of the "Quiet Storm Pillow Talk" stuff they also serve up. Listen to "Just Smile"...how could anyone possibly listen to that track without thinking "Fourplay?"

Second, he uses real musicians, and especially a real DRUMMER. I'm sure there are programmed drum tracks somewhere in the mix on "Ready To Play," but they don't REPLACE the drummer. That's my biggest complaint against Chuck Loeb, and the reason why I never listen to his music.

Finally, he's a guitar player. That's why I buy his CDs. I play guitar, I like the sound of the guitar, and when I buy a CD featuring a prominent guitarist I want to hear virtuoso guitar as the featured instrument, not endless honking and bleating sax solos (Russ Freeman, are you getting any of this?)...

Nils is by no means a "trailblazer"...too many influences worn on his sleeve for that to happen. But the influences are all solid ones and, two albums into the journey, he's slowly becoming his own man. He's the one to watch, folks...

I use an iPod when I take my daily aerobic walks, I have energetic, motivating jazz music loaded to help me keep up the pace I need for the workout. Nils one of several guys that is such a big help to me during my workouts, with this music pumping into my head I don't even WANT to stop walking. When I do force myself to quit and go home, I get home and end up dancing because this music is so beautifully infective!!!

Nils is a genius on the guitar and I am totally entranced by all the pieces on this READY TO PLAY cd! If you like smooth jazz you won't want to turn this one off.
