I had attempted to crochet several times after having been an obsessive knitter, but have always gotten frustrated with learning on my own. On a whim I got this book, and within 15 mins had a pretty good-sized crochet sample that was neat and contained several different stitches.

For such a small book there are very detailed instructions for beginner crocheters for many stitch variations and projects. The directions are so crystal clear that even a younger teenager would have no problems learning, and the projects are contemporary and varied. Teens and young adults would especially like some of the projects, such as a delicate lacy camisole or the beach cover-up. I crocheted a square variation on the cat bed which my cat adores. The example pictures use yarns with shimmer and contrasting colors so the stitches really stand out, a solution to an annoying problem I have had with many knitting and crochet books. As an added bonus, the book has a trifold so you can stand it up and look at it as you crochet.

This book made me want to crochet more (if that is possible). I love the stand up book, makes it so much easier to use and the colors and designs are great.

This book is excellent. I am a relatively new crocheter and I have been looking for resources to help me expand my abilities. This book has excellent photos of a variety of different stitches. Their explanations are easy to understand and the projects are modern and cool. Great!

I found this book to be a great reference not only for the basic crochet stitches, but also for some more interesting and advanced stitches. It even has a little library of stitches with instructions and photos. Additionally, each section "lesson" has a project that uses that stitch or skill, for example a hat to learn both crocheting in rounds and the bobble stitch. The spiral wire binding and fold-up stand are also neat features. The photos are very good and help understanding the instruction. I highly recommend this book for both beginners and more advanced crocheters.

This is an excellent learning tool for those who want to
learn crochet. I'm an avid knitter but want to learn
crochet especially in-the-round as I want to make my own
hats and caps, but I just couldn't find a book to get me
started.

This book has wonderful photos and close-ups of every technique.
The projects are slanted towards younger adults but can be
adapted for any age. A very well-thought-out book and easily
portable as it closes with its own velcro clasp. I highly recommend.

I usually get the books from the library and have a look at them before I decide if they are any good. I got this one from the library and decided I had to have this book. It is great for new crocheters and experienced ones also.
I am an experienced crocheter and I really loved this book so much so I have brought it off amazon. I am interested in crocheting cables and I havent been able to find a book with plain and understandable instructions on how to do this. This one has all this, great pictures and interesting techniques as well.
I think I may be able to make that cable jumper now with crochet instead of knitting it like I usually would.
Great book highly recommend it.

I have bought several copies of this book. It is just so useful to give to someone I am teaching to crochet. The pictures are super clear and they can use them to remind themselves of the stitches. Also the projects are very well written up and pictured and help the learner to progress in skills and the projects are not super super boring. Even the way the book is put together, with the spiral binding and stand up bit, helps the beginner to use it easily. This is my favorite book for beginners to crochet.

This book has great instructions and is the first book you should purchase. It's very clear and informative but also has tons of information on how to get fancier once you are ready. It's very convenient that it stands up.

However, I only give it 4 stars because so many of the patterns are ugly. Who is seriously going to wear a lace tank top made of yarn? Or sew crocheted "lace" onto a normal t-shirt's collar?

I have used the basic patterns many times over and adapted them as I became more skilled. A really great book for beginners, but not really useful for someone who already has crocheted several projects as the patterns are so basic and not all of them are at all usable.

After twenty-some years without a crochet hook in my hand, at 64 I'm delighted with this book. Many stitches I remember, and many more to learn. I hope to learn every stitch. With the clarity of the pictures, I think I can do this. After all, Grandma Moses only started painting when she was eighty. She painted for another twenty years. Heck, I'm a spring chicken. By the time I'm eighty, I should be very accomplished indeed. Thank you Susie Johns for your wonderful book. Just what I have been looking for.
