5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEGINNING OF THE PATTI PAGE LEGACY!!!, December 29, 2004
By
This review is from: Ready Set Go With Patti Page (Audio CD)
I was still sucking my thumb when these songs were recorded (most of them anyway) and what a find! I've waited years for SENTIMENTAL MUSIC on CD! Sentimental Music was the flip of WOULD I LOVE YOU. The song was never listed on the Billboard charts, but was on the Cashbox charts for 10 weeks or more, along side a recording of the song by Bing Crosby. Other "chart hits" included in this collection are SAY SOMETHING SWEET (with Vic Damone), SO IN LOVE and MY JEALOUS EYES.
You are in for a real treat as you listen to the many styles of songs Patti sang early in her recording career from jazz oriented tunes like WHAT EVERY WOMAN KNOWS, I'VE GOT SOME FORGETTING TO DO, FIRST TIME I KISSED YOU,THERE'S A MAN IN MY LIFE, READY SET GO, GIVE ME TIME and IT STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN to early covers of R&B like TOMORROW NIGHT, ALL MY LOVE BELONGS TO YOU and the screamin' ONE SWEET LETTER. Patti also gives Broadway and the movies a go with CAN'T HELP LOVIN THAT MAN, MY DREAM IS YOURS and JUST ONE WAY TO SAY I LOVE YOU. It's great to hear some of Patti's sides with Vic Damone (maybe someday we'll have a Patti duet collection as she recorded with Frankie Laine, Rusty Draper and Vic while on Mercury).
For Patti fans this is a must collection. It fits beautifully with the Flare collection SO IN LOVE.....there are a few duplications but between the 2 collections we have most of Patti's early singles....not just the hits which are available on numerous collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable CD of Patti Page's Early 78 rpm Single Records, November 19, 2004

This CD is imported from the United Kingdom and includes 25 songs that were released as 78 rpm singles early in Patti Page's career. Most of the songs are new to many of us fans who may not have been old enough to hear and remember them when they were first released.

I enjoyed the jazz-flavored tracks such as "Twelve O'Clock Flight," "Ready Set Go," and "Give Me Time." The tracks with Vic Damone are delightful, especially "Yes, Yes, Yes." The songs in the CD, except for the last few, are songs from the 1940s and are sung in that distinctive 1940's style. "Dear Hearts and Gentle People" is a 1949 cover record of the Bing Crosby hit. The next year he covered Patti's million selling record, "All My Love."

Bernie Wayne's "Sentimental Music," of all Patti's single records, is just about the most commercial sounding one that never quite became a hit. Unfortunately, it happened to be on the flip side of the hit, "Would I Love You." It may have become a two-sided hit if her next record, "Mockingbird Hill," were not released so soon after it.

These recordings represent an interesting and important part of Patti's long recording career. It's great that someone has put them together in one CD that I hope is available to fans for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars fine collection of early recordings from the incomparable Patti Page, September 18, 2007

This review is from: Ready Set Go With Patti Page (Audio CD)
It's no secret that Patti Page has a natural ability to make a song sound like a grand symphony; and this CD gives us a generous twenty-six tracks of her early singles on 78 rpm records. Yes, there is some surface noise along the way but what we do get is five star quality!!!

The CD track set begins with "What Every Woman Knows." The horns start the melody very well; and Patti's voice is rich, warm and vibrant. Great! "I've Got Some Forgetting To Do" has that big band flavor to the melody and Patti sings this passionately; she sings of a love gone awry. Patti also gets the opportunity to show off her vocal range on "I've Got Some Forgetting To Do" as well.

"There's A Man In My Life" gives us Patti singing a very romantic ballad; she croons this to perfection. Listen for a great piano arrangement for "There's A Man In My Life." Great! "Ready Set Go" begins with some great guitar; Patti sings this without a superfluous note. "Ready Set Go" showcases Patti Page singing about how she wants to spend romantic time alone with her boyfriend. "Say Something Sweet To Your Sweetheart" has Patti doing this excellent ballad with Vic Damone; together they make "Say Something Sweet To Your Sweetheart" a masterpiece! The violins for this number work wonders to bolster it, too. Listen also for a special treat: Patti Page and Vic Damone interview each other just after this track.

"So In Love" has a great backup chorus to bolster Patti's rich vocals; and "Yes, Yes, Yes" gives us another duet Patti performs with Vic Damone. Patti and Vic do a superb job on "Yes, Yes, Yes" and the arrangement for strings and piano works wonders for this ballad. "Dear Hearts And Gentle People" hints at the country type ballad Patti eventually specialized in doing; the musical arrangement works well and the backup chorus harmonizes to perfection!

"I Love You Because" shows Patti swinging brightly as the piano plays beautifully. Patti sings of how she loves her man just because he's the person he truly is. The last track, entitled "My Jealous Eyes," has a great Latin beat to it and Patti performs this flawlessly. I predict that you will enjoy "My Jealous Eyes" very, very much.

The liner notes include an essay by Joe Philips printed in English, French and German. You also get great artwork, the song credits and the recording dates for each song. Excellent!

Patti Page continues her illustrious career as she entertains millions of people the world over. With any luck, she will continue to entertain for many years to come. I highly recommend this CD for Patti Page fans; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will love this album for quite some while to come.
