Book Description

July 12, 2005 3 and upP and up
Here in one big lap book is everything a child AND his or her parent needs to know before the first day of preschool! The stories, poems, and activities involve not only basic early learning concepts--letters and early phonics, numbers and counting, shapes, colors, opposites, etc.--but also address important aspects of socialization--making friends, sharing, taking turns, cooperating, getting dressed, going to the potty, saying good-bye without tears. And for the parent, who is often as anxious about preschool as the child, the author has included extensive Notes to the Parent showing how to best use each entry in the book. Authoritative and brimming with bright, lively illustrations, this book makes getting ready for preschool a happy adventure!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–Reading readiness, numerals, and socialization skills are promoted in this engaging activity book. Children can help Casey count his favorite treasures to take to school (One blankie for quiet time. Two books with words that rhyme). The picture rebus of animal sounds invites participation. What's in the Classroom? familiarizes preschoolers with a new setting, and objects in the detailed scene are labeled to extend vocabulary. Primary concepts such as color, shapes, and opposites are conveyed in Kelley's cheerful, watercolor cartoons of a culturally diverse class having fun in a variety of environments–from the Triangle-Square Ranch to a rainy day on the playground. Short stories address topics such as separation anxiety and fears of Will I Have a Friend? Hays also includes a helpful section for parents that highlights the developmentally appropriate learning opportunities each activity provides. A useful resource to share with families preparing for the first day of school.–Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

From Booklist

PreS. With lots of cheerfully illustrated rhymes, stories, and interactive games, this big picture book is an excellent title to prepare kids for preschool. Each spacious, double-page spread dramatizes concepts to talk about--from the alphabet, numbers, and colors to opposites and parts of the body. There are also stories about making friends, sharing, and much more. Some stories deal with real problems. One shows how hard it is to say good-bye to Dad; another how hard it is to go home when school is over; a third that it's not always easy to make friends. Written without jargon, Hays' detailed, hands-on educational notes to adults suggest how to use each story and activity with the child, whether pointing at and naming objects in the classroom, having fun with phonics, or sharing lunch. 4.0 out of 5 stars Going to preschool, September 29, 2005
This review is from: Ready, Set, Preschool!: Stories, Poems and Picture Games with an Educational Guide for Parents (Hardcover)
I bought this book to help my son transition from being at home to pre-school. We read about the different things at school, playing, being dropped off by his parents and making new friends. I substitute the names in the book for his name so that he will feel comfortable going to preschool. He still cried during his first week of school, but each day I would take the book out and go over things with him, like what's in the classroom, daddy dropping him off, etc. It's his 3rd week of school and no more crying. He's doing great!

What a delightful book for both children and adults who have contact with children! How convenient to have things to read to small children and things older children can read themselves.
