Treasury is the right word for this book! From the hilarious Sheep In A Jeep and Morris Has A Cold, to the interesting and educational Our Earth In Space the stories riveted my four-year-old son. 2.0 out of 5 stars Abridged titles, a disappointment.
It's a cute collection, but I was most excited about the Morris the Moose story... only to find out that it is abridged, as I believe many of the stories in here are. It's okay, but not the full versions of the original stories. I really wanted Morris Has a Cold, as my own copy from my childhood is somewhat tattered, only to find that it is only about half the pages as...

An extra bonus is that the book Morris Has a Cold by Bernard Wiseman is no longer in print. But with this treasury, a child can still delight in Morris' hilarious verbal misunderstandings.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was impressed, May 31, 2000

I just received this book yesterday and I was so happy by the response of my 4 1/2 year old daughter. She loved listening to the variety of stories, laughing aloud to some, and she loved the tongue twisters. She especially like the short stories where there are words and pictures in the sentences. We read these together and she felt like she was really reading. This gave her such a confidence boost. She insisted on taking the book to daycare today to read aloud to her class.

Another thing I like is that there are so many stories. This will be a great book to take on vacation. You could read a different story everyday and just pack one book.

This book is wonderful for a variety of reasons. I know it will be helpful for a beginning reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good collection for early readers, July 8, 2001

I bought this book for my son who is in first grade. He has grown with this book - from the stories where some of the words are replaced by pictures, to the riddles and jokes, to complete stories of Frog and Toad and Morris the Moose. Most importantly - he picks up this book now and reads for pleasure.

My one complaint is that the book seems to be organized backwards - the easier reading is in the back, the harder is in the front.

The same applies to the Ready-Set-Read and Laugh anthology. Good collections and my kids enjoy reading them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection, but NOT for Beginners - a review of "Ready... Set... Read!, February 7, 2007

This review is from: Ready... Set... Read!: The Beginning Reader's Treasury (Hardcover)
I'm always fascinated by what people (apparently even educators) think of as a beginning reader. I think of a true beginner as one who is still sounding out and occasionally stumbling over simple words like: sat, is, and gives. A true beginner in my book also tires easily if there is too much text per page.

If this description fits your beginning reader, then I don't think this is the primer for you. The book is great --we really like it --but it's not a collection that a true beginner is going to come away from with a sense of accomplishment. It's just too hard.

For example, words you will find in this book are: gooey, idea, chocolate, melting, splattered, squirrel, heavens, noticed, beautiful, travels, spinning, everyone, telescope, throat, forehead, coughed and tongue. Having a child who is just about to turn 5 y.o. I can tell you that these are too difficult for him.

Another drawback is that several of the stories have too many words per page for new readers. The Frog and Toad story and the non-fiction piece are prime examples.

That said, if you sole aim is not to necessarily purchase a primer, I would advise you to check this book out. It has a good selection of stories, poems, jokes, pictogram thingies, and even a non-fiction piece about the solar system. Enough selection that you ought to be able to judge what sort of story your child might be drawn to.

Four Conditional Stars. [B+]. A very nice hardback book that offers some great selections such as 'Sheep in a Jeep' and 'Frog and Toad' and 'Little Bear'. Some of the poems are lame, but some are nice. The artwork is varied. The writing is varied. In general, a Very Good Read-aloud.

Not a true beginners primer. My estimate would be a book leveled at first to second graders.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 6 year old LOVES this book! *UPDATE*, February 8, 2010
By
This review is from: Ready... Set... Read!: The Beginning Reader's Treasury (Hardcover)
I was specifically looking for another book that my six year old daughter would enjoy reading on her own. I wasn't sure about this book, but based on previous reviews, I took a shot, and BULLSEYE! My daughter LOVES reading this book!

Now, some of the stories, poems, etc. are cute...to me. And then some are like "Huh?"...to me. But, I am not six. This book is not meant for me.

So, based solely on my daughter's reaction, I rate this 5 outta 5!

*UPDATE* We've owned this book for over a year and a half now, & our daughter still pulls this book off her shelf to either read to us (the jokes & nonsense rhymes, in particular), or to herself. She still gets a kick out of it even though she could probably recite the entire book by memory.

There's nothing flashy about this book. The illustrations are reminiscent of the 70s. Nothing pops out. No special online codes to be found. That being said, it keeps my very intelligent, good humored, creative child entertained; consistently so, at that.

I absolutely love this book! I read it all the time as a child and just knew that I wanted my kids to read it. I ordered it and received it promptly. My sons enjoy all the stories. It is easy for them to read it and the pictures are so vibrant. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars o.k. CUTE STORIES AND great for toddlers, December 11, 2010

This review is from: Ready... Set... Read!: The Beginning Reader's Treasury (Hardcover)
This has short-versions of longer stories and lots of great illustrations. I definitely think it's a little bit overrated as far as quality of stories and book length but compared with it's educational value, particularly the stories where you fill in the word by looking at the picture.

This book actually is very valuable as it sort of, in my opinion, mimics the style of many reading books in school. It's sort of a conglomerate of poetry, short story/prose etc.

Great for my toddler. He's not in love with any particular story yet but I LOVED little bear as a kid in elementary so I want him to get a head-start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love this collection of stories!, October 31, 2010
This review is from: Ready... Set... Read!: The Beginning Reader's Treasury (Hardcover)
I owned this set of stories as a little girl and I absolutely loved them! In fact, I loved them SO much that I actually used to pull it out as a preteen and read them every year. The ultimate test of how wonderful these stories are is that here we are, over 14 years later, and I am going to purchase this for me niece who will be born in January.

What a wonderful, timeless collection of bedtime stories that will have your kids begging to learn how to read!

I purchased this book for my 6 year old grandson who is just learning to read. He and his 4 year old sister really enjoy the cute stories and section on games. I plan on purchasing this for other grandchildren.
