4.0 out of 5 stars A good "primer" for the new shooter, July 7, 2001

This review is from: Ready Set Shoot [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is basically geared for someone who is considering buying a handgun for the first time. I bought the video because I was pretty sure I wanted to get into handgun shooting, but was somewhat overwhelmed and intimidated because I didn't have anyone to consult about what kind of gun to buy, where to shoot it, how to shoot it well, etc.

Ready Set Shoot talks about the differences between revolvers and semi-automatics and the different parts of both. It also teaches the fundamentals of gun safety and the fundamentals of good marksmanship (stance, sight alignment, etc.). It also briefly touches upon the topic of self-defense.

If you have a friend or family member who owns handguns and can teach you gun safety, marksmanship, etc., then you might be disappointed with this video. There's nothing in this video that you won't learn in an basic pistol class, and no video is a good enough substitute for hands-on training. But I found Ready Set Shoot to be a good introduction; it made me feel more knowledgeable and less overwhelmed about purchasing & shooting a handgun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic but important information, January 14, 2011
This review is from: Ready Set Shoot [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I rented this vhs video from my local library, wanting to get into handguns but not where to start this covered the basics of how to stand hold and shoot and the differences in revolvers and semiautomatics. I found it very helpful on the first level of ok I am interested what's next.

From there I attended a FIRST SHOTS class at a local gun range, these are sponsored by [...] these are free classes with about 3 hours of hands on instruction, I always tend to learn better visually and having someone there to answer questions was also helpful, I found the video here a great start and the first shots class a bit of overlap yet the next step for me in education and at the end you do shoot a handgun (about 20-30 shots).

Since then I have moved onto my first 9mm and joined a local gun owners club where I find the members are awesome at sharing tips and information.

Now my wife is also interested in learning to shoot the 9mm as the gun club I joined has a few women and she isn't intimidated like she thought. So I am going to get the vhs back from the library for her to start with it like i did for the basics.

If your interested in buying or using a handgun and are starting from square one like I did, I recommend trying to find this thru your library network or purchasing it used if possible.
