Very helpful and actually helped my son with social skills,

This review is from: Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 1-3 (J-B Ed: Ready-to-Use Activities) (Paperback)
This book is a series of lessons that teach different social skills. Although it's set up for a classroom setting, I've been doing them with my 8 year old son. I have been very pleased with the change I've seen in his behavior from doing these lessons at home. The book is very easy for follow for a non-educator such as myself and most importantly, it's effective!

A wonderful asset for any teacher or parent,

This review is from: Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 4 - 6 (Paperback)
This is very user friendly and is set out in lessons with the objective listed, the need for the lesson, introduction, skill components, rehearsal of behavior or skill and then practice and continuation of skill. It has reproducable worksheets for most lessons. I am the parent of an autistic child. I have a legal background not an education teaching degree but this is layed out so it will be very easy to implement. It would also be a great assest for any classroom to promote classroom unity and awareness of others. This would also be helpful for Sunday school classes where the teachers are often local volunteers. I may go back and get the grade K-3 book as well.

Ready-To-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 7,
By michelle griswold (Des Moines, Iowa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 7 - 12 (Spiral-bound)
This book is a great resource for teachers, administrators, and parents! It offers activities that strengthen teenagers social skills with concentration in communication, responsibility, respect, and many others. The students I used it with thought that the activities were "fun" and worked when they needed the skills the most. I would recommend this book to all who work with teenagers.

Simply the Best!,

This review is from: Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 4 - 6 (Paperback)
This book has been a life-saver for me as a new school counselor. It addresses many social skills issues which need to be addressed in the elementary school setting. It includes everything from how to make and keep friends, to anger, self-control and everything in between. Really a great resource!!

The description said you could easily apply the skills and exercises at home, outside of the classroom environment, but it is clearly written for classroom use.The author doesn't really explain what to do with each exercise either, it's seemed more like a list of suggestions or ideas than real activities. For instance they would say "come up with a story to show typical youngsters conflicting over a problem and give examples of how to resolve those problems without violence." That's what I got the book for.... if I knew how to come up with scenerios like that and exercises on my own, I wouldn't need help. I gove it 2 stars because there are a couple of worksheets included that do seem like they are useful practices, but other than that, this was a waste of money.

Valuable Resouce but...,

I have used this book often in my social skills group for 6th graders. It is a good starting point but some of the material needs to be adjusted to be used with these students or simply to be more entertaining. I tend to use the information to introduce a topic, then use an activity or game, and then will use the reproducible worksheets as a review/post-test.

Strictly Junior High material,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 7-12 (J-B Ed: Ready-to-Use Activities) (Paperback)
These social skills' lessons are much better suited to the level of junior high or even lower. My high school students did not respond to these activities and thus the title's suggestion (grade 7-12) is misleading. I will not try these activities again with my grade nine students.

I am a mental health therapist who works with adolescents with a variety of mental health needs, primarily deficient in how to perform socially with others and within community, school, etc. This book offers a simple interactive approach that reaches children/adolescents by incorporating a learning component and an interactive component. So far the social skills group I facilitate has enjoyed the use of each lessons in this book.

Great Combo of Activities,

This review is from: Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 4 - 6 (J-B Ed: Ready-to-Use Activities) (Paperback)
Haven't used this in practice yet, but I read through most of the activies. This book offers a lot of great social skills activities that are easy to incoroporate in the classroom or for school counselors. You can easily pick and choose activities that might be useful in your own group sessions or adapt activities to your group goals. It could be improved by including more last session/wrap up ideas for closure. It could also implement additional processing questions so the user doesn't have to think to much to create his or her own.

quick and easy!,
This review is from: Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 4 - 6 (J-B Ed: Ready-to-Use Activities) (Paperback)
I love all of the ready to use social skill books. I am a school social worker for prek-8 school district, so as busy as I am, I love that these activities are right there with little preparation! My only complaint is that these books used to be spiral-bound which makes it easier to photocopy activities. They are not spiral-bound anymore, but either way great purchase for school social workers and counselors! |
