Great book for University ESL in Korea,
By
This review is from: Ready to Write: A First Composition Text, Third Edition (Paperback)
This book almost looks too simple, but it worked out very, very well. The problem in Korea is that students often feel they should be learning from difficult-looking textbooks, despite their level. Also, they feel they should just instantly go from knowing nothing to writing full-page TOEFL essays! This book doesn't look difficult, so I was a little worried at first, but it turned out fine.
This book really helped my uni students learn how to write a proper basic paragraph. It could also be used for high school students, provided they can form sentences on their own. I also required my students to write a daily journal of at least 20 lines or so (using paragraph form). I was satisfied with this book, and my students said it was "good."

Good for higher level ESL students,

I used this text with a class of 25 ESL students in Japan, most of them who had been abroad for an extensive period of time and were highly motivated to learn English writing. This is a good choice of book if your students' already possess intermediate writing skills and would like to progress to paragraph and short essay writing.

It is very hard to find step by step writing programs, especially for ESL students, and especially in a sequence that makes sense. I have started using it with my high school ESL students and very optimistic about improving their writing. It is for high beginning and low intermediate students. Here are the chapter headings: Organization, the key to good writing; understanding paragraphs, organizing information by time, organization information by order of importance, organizing information by space, the writing process, supporting the main idea, giving instructions, expressing an opinion, comparing and contrasting, writing about causes and effects, writing personal and business letter, writing summaries. You can see how comprehensive it is. |
