Editorial Reviews

Review

There has been no better time in history to have celiac disease, thanks to Real Life with Celiac Disease. This book would have saved me much time and great stress during my abrupt introduction to the gluten-free world. Even the most well-informed patients have much to learn from this accessible guide --Ezra Brettler, diagnosed in 2008

This is the first book to take a comprehensive look at the medical, dietary, nutritional, emotional, psychological, and social aspects of celiac disease and its only treatment, the gluten-free diet. If you have celiac disease, if you know of someone who has celiac disease, or if you treat people who have celiac disease, this book is essential reading. --Steven Galante, The Healthy Villi (Greater Boston Celiac/DH Support Group)

After the shock of my diagnosis wore off, I realized having celiac disease wasn t so bad because I am in control, through education and good medical care. I recommend this book for anyone with celiac disease and anyone who cares for you. You will learn how to be proactive in treating and managing your disease --Karen Walsh, diagnosed in 2006 after a lifetime of symptoms

5.0 out of 5 stars Every newly-diagnosed person should have this! July 27, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I almost didn't buy this book because I'm an "old-pro" on the gluten-free diet and most of the time I already know what's in the books. But I'm glad I did get it because it is exceptionally well-done! There are many, many aspects of celiac disease and the gluten-free diet, and this book is organized with a short chapter on each subject, written by a person well-qualified in that area. It would have saved me literally YEARS of trying to figure all of this out, if only I had this book when I was first diagnosed. Certainly anyone starting out on the gluten-free diet should have it, and also anyone who still isn't doing well after going on the diet. I'm glad to have it now as a reference and I did read some things that were new to me. The organization of this book would also be an excellent model for books on any number of other medical conditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Resource September 22, 2010
By Lisa
Format:Paperback
I don't enough accolades to do this book justice! It written clearly, yet it is incredibly comprehensive. It anticipates the questions that both "old pros" and newly diagnosed celiacs often have. The book is an invaluable resource for maximizing health and nutrition while living gluten free. Much to my chagrin, many other books I have read about living gluten free seem to downplay the general principles of nutrition. This book is different. This book does not lecture you, but it provides invaluable recommendations, tenable data, and practical applications. It also addresses many other conditions that often coexist or stem from Celiac. Thanks to this book, for the first time since my diagnosis, I feel like I can be just as healthy without the gluten-containing whole grains that are so ubiquitous in our culture. Dr. Leffler, Ms. Dennis and their collaborators have done a wonderful job addressing the nuances of this disease. But the book not simply theory; there is a clinical focus that is really great. Every chapter contains a case study with real patients, who've had real experiences. I have found a new gluten free bible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Celiacs! October 18, 2010
Format:Paperback
I just got this book yesterday and already it has been immensely helpful. I have had celiac for 2 years and have read many books and know a lot but this book is chock-full of resources for the novice and the "pro" alike. It has websites and articles and tips for many situations. I like that the chapters are organized by topic so you don't have to wade through a ton of material to find the thing you need to know. Each chapter is written by an expert on that particular sub-topic. Kudos to Melinda Dennis and Dr. Leffler for this important and thorough addition to the celiac canon!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good one October 11, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've read so many books about Celiac Disease and know more than your average Joe... what I liked especially about this book is the broad scope of information and personal stories. It will fill in the gaps in your knowledge about Celiac, but more important, it will introduce you to the range of experiences that come along with being human and having this condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource December 31, 2010
By MoChap
Format:Paperback
Highly recommended for anyone trying to understand the complicated journey of living with CD. The authors do the near-impossible by making the science accessible to the lay reader without "dumbing it down". The format of the book (starting each chapter with a case study) added to it's already impressive readability, and I came away with vital information and a more sophisticated understanding of CD and the gluten-free diet. Inspiring and hope-inducing! Rejoice! This book is a must-read for anyone with, or who loves someone with, Celiac Disease.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely wonderful book December 4, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an absolutely fantastic book. Each chapter is written by a Celiac/gluten free expert, ranging from the authors to Dr. Fasano to Dr. Green and many more. The topics are ones that I hear so frequently from my clients, like the impact of cheating, gluten challenges, a gluten-free and vegetarian diet, Celiac and anxiety, gluten intolerance, and much, much more. I'm a dietitian who specializes in CD avid reader on Celiac both for my clients and for myself, and yet I was surprised to find some statistics in the book I haven't seen before.

I've asked for a second copy for the holidays. And, let me say I've never reviewed a non-cookbook on my website before, because I can't remember being as enthusiastic about any other book on Celiac Disease.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent October 7, 2010
Format:Paperback
Real Life with Celiac Disease provides a wealth of information about celiac disease and the gluten free diet addressing both the common, clear cut issues as well as the complex or controversial topics surrounding the disease and diet. The topics covered in this book answer the questions a large majority of people have about celiac disease including confusing test results, difference between gluten intolerance and celiac disease, and nutrients one may be missing while following a gluten free diet. The information is provided in a clear, yet thorough manner. I highly recommend all individuals interested in celiac disease (patients, family members, and health care professionals alike) read this book.
