5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic visit to the 19th century!!

1.0 out of 5 stars a "Real" dissapointment
JUST PLAIN AWFUL. This isn't a real diary, it's a middle aged man's attempt at being cute, and it fails horribly. Whatever charm or wit it may have is completely obscured by relentless effort to be 'pwecious'. The spelling and grammar are so ridiculous it completely destroys the creditability of the narrative voice.

Take the worst elements of Dennis the Menace,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Create an heirloom, April 29, 2004

Burt D. Breedlove (east TX, United States) - See all my reviews
I have a 1903 edition (7th printing) that my mother (born 1911) read as a girl and passed on to me. I read it as a boy (1950's) and again recently (2004). It is an easy & enjoyable read for any age reader. It is a time-machine that will transport you to to the 1860's through the eyes of a young boy. You get his candid view of life, neighbors, family, events. Get it for yourself, your kids or a good friend. This is reading recreation and an escape from the 20th-21st centuries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A jouney into the past, January 8, 1998
By A Customer
My grandfather gave me this book in 1970 when I was 10 years old. I have read and reread this book many times over the last 28 years and still get as much enjoyment now as when I was a young boy. I consider it one of my dearest treasures and will present it to my son when he is old enough to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and funny, September 22, 1999

I was given a copy of this book when I was 11. I somehow lost my copy over the years. On my 60th. birthday, my sister gave me a copy that had a 1909 publishing date. After I broke out in tears, I vowed I wouldn't lose track of this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rereading this book is like looking through a family album., February 22, 1999
By A Customer
My grandmother had this book and it was the first book I had ever read in one sitting (at the age of ten!) My mother, sister and I would laugh about the misadventures of the characters as if they were our own friends. Now that both my grandmother and my mother are gone, my copy of the book sits in the bookcase with scrapbooks and picture albums. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor for the kid in you, July 31, 2008

This review is from: Real Diary of a Real Boy (Paperback)
Henry Shute was a very popular humorist a hundred years ago; some say he rivaled Mark Twain. These supposed diary entries of a young boy recall a more innocent day, when kids could roam all over town without fear, while reminding us that the playfulness, even impishness, of the young still prevails. When our son was 12 or 13, we used to get many giggles and guffaws in reading these tales to each other. Very enjoyable.

I wish I could find "Letters to Beany, or the Love Letters of Plupy Shute" in print, but this is a fine book by the same author. (Actually, I did find a collector's copy of the other book -- for $125.00!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Look At Times Past, June 19, 2003

This is a wonderful book for anyone at any age. I have read it four or fives times since may father gave me his copy in 1957. His grandfather gave it to him in 1931, so the book has become somewhat of an heirloom. It is the view of a childhood that is quite a contrast to the video gaming, televison oriented life in which children grow up today. It may even make you wish you grew up with Henry Shute.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful story about a young boy's life, August 8, 1997
By

A boy is told to keep a journal by his father, much to his chagrin. The result is a tale of a boy's life in the mid 1800's that will make every reader remember their own childhood, and wish for simpler days. This is the real diary of a real boy. Words are left misspelled, which only adds to the charm. I was fortunate enough to read this book on vacation in an old cabin. I was then even more fortunate to find a first edition. It is a book I will keep and then pass onto my own son; the day's of a boy's life, when playing and fighting and friends and summer were the only important things. Nostalga hold your hat. This is a good un'

The spelling and grammar are so ridiculous it completely destroys the creditability of the narrative voice.

Take the worst elements of Dennis the Menace, The Little Rascals, and The Family Circus and you've got a fair idea of both the intellectual level and writing style.

That Shute was called 'the Mark Twain of Exeter' proves that even in 1902, PR was more important than talent.

Don't waste your time with the free download until you've taken a look at the sample pages. If you can bear it, your stomach is stronger than mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real diary of a boy, March 14, 2011
By
Sally (Indiana United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Real Diary of a Real Boy (Paperback)
This is a story about a very sweet young boy, full of good old fashion fun. I loved every single page of adventure. Very much reminded me of Mark Twain, but it was even better than Twain. I loved the bit about the chickens in which he decided to sit out in the hen house to find the rat. It turned out the hen ate the eggs, so he took his blow dart to teach her a lesson and accidently killed her. Not to mention the cayanne pepper he gave his sick hen and loaded her up out of ignorance, so she died a terrible death. lol. It was his Fathers hen, which made it worse. Every page is full of great stories that anyone of any age would love. I laughed and laughed as I turned each page. Its a great gift to any young boy. I loved it. Thank you for provided this story on kindle. It was the best one yet.
