Editorial Reviews

REAL ESTATE waft in on vibes of hazy summers past. The New Jersey quartet cut the sleeves short and the pop smooth to shade you from the midday heat. Every song works its way to that part of your consciousness that reveled in the fleeting waves of freedom that eked in once classes broke and the sun lingered a little longer over suburban roofs. And with three quarters of the band holding down Garden State roots its no surprise that a bit of Jersey indie-pop heritage sneaks its way into their sound, lifting the most sun streaked moments from The Feelies and Yo La Tengo and filtering them through the kaleidoscope of memories aimless drives through parched neighborhood streets. MARTIN COURTNEY s songwriting has a way of wrapping up the immediacy of youth with the ennui of age for the perfect shade of bittersweet bliss, mind you though, much heavier on the sweet than the bitter. Add to this MATTHEW MONDANILE s (DUCKTAILS, PREDATOR VISION) shimmering guitar strains full of equal parts sea foam and beer foam, pepper in the boardwalk clatter of ETIENNE PIERRE DUGUAY s drums, ALEX BLEEKER s staccato low end and the perfect afternoon is just a lawn chair and boom box away. Andy French (Raven Sings the Blues). Received a Best New Music, 8.5 rating from Pitchfork.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm enjoying this January 10, 2010
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very pleasant debut. It's got jangly guitars such as you might hear in the Trashcan Sinatras, it's got vocal harmonies such as you might hear in Dr. Dog or Grizzly Bear, and it's got just a tinge of the darkness you might hear in The National. Very glad to have downloaded this, and I look forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply put: one of the best albums of 2009 September 2, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I immediately fell in love with this album. I always try to find bands that really catch my ear and attention, especially with all the clone bands going around these days that are not in it for the art but for the fame, and these guys really really did pull me in. One of my favorite albums to listen to is slowly becoming sonic opium for me: slow, glistening, nonchalant, stagnant, and addicting. One of my favorite lines of all time in the most unexpected of places is in this album:

"Until you find your rolex in the sand
You'll be stopping
Until that solid gold is in your hand
You'll be happy"

That line just clangs at the core of me. I have seen thm twice and both times they were amazing. So go listen to this album's entirety and enjoy a nice dose of sonic opium because this album will make you heavy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Check out this indie band... March 4, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Another one of my favorite Indie-releases of the year, Real Estate's debut album draws on indie greats Yo La Tengo, early Shins, and other not-quite-lo-fi masters. A relaxing and rewarding listen, Real Estate glides and caresses the listener while describing the fate of the suburban dwellers, (two tracks with Suburban in the title), with lyrics such as "the suburban dogs are in love with their chains." The most upbeat the albums gets is only a brisk walk, "Beach Comber" being one of my favorites, but the pleasantries of the album leave the listener satisfied instead of waiting for more...unless of course if by more you mean their next album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good June 21, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a pretty good lo-fi album. It reminds me of a little bit of 'let it be' era replacements mixed with a little modest mouse. I really like that the vocals are in the bottom of the mix and are hardly audible. I think this is great because you have to strain to hear the words witch makes them more important. I did find that some of the songs were a little to sparse and repetitive but on a whole it was a good listening experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Shoegaze/Surfer Rock for a Summer Day April 15, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I came across this album thanks to an episode of How I Met Your Mother which featured the lead track, "Beach Comber".

I love the sound of this band- it's as if they just dropped a mic in the middle of a warehouse and started playing. Their music conjures up images of a warm sunny day just hanging out by the beach. It's a definite go-to record whenever I feel stressed out.

The three major stand-out tracks are "Beach Comber", "Fake Blues", and "Green River".

Unfortunately, this album does take a bit of an energy nose-dive right from the get-go. "Beach Comber" has a fairly peppy sound to it, but the energy fades off during "Pool Swimmers" and doesn't come back until "Fake Blues". Track order aside, this is still a pretty solid album and a high recommendation if you're a fan of surfer rock, or just want some good tunes to chill out to while driving on a sunny summer day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring on the summer.... March 28, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Just discovering the pleasures of this great album. There's a surprising intensity and happy urgency for what seemingly appears to be just another jangly semi-low-fi-indie album. Forget all the labels and categories, put aside a small part of your day, and let Real Estate's pleasurable music usher in your Spring/Summer of 2010. Joyful stuff !!

5.0 out of 5 stars great debut album March 11, 2010

Real Estate brings a sound that should be familiar to indie rock fans, but it never really feels old. Definitely a band to watch out for in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vocals are a problem February 4, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this CD after hearing good things about Real Estate from several normally reliable sources. I did enjoy the instrumentals, but my appreciation of the other songs was greatly diminished by the murky and indistinct vocals, which sound as if they were recorded with the mic all the way across the room from the singer. To me it seems obvious how much better this music would be if only we could hear the singing better.
