great informational book on how Fire Departments work,

I had no prior knowledge of Fire Departments other than watching Rescue Me on TV!! This book, although somewhat technical in its layout, is none the less very interesting reading. Her research was to determine the influences of both gender and race in urban fire departments and how they play out.
Being a fireman is such an old and somewhat almost sacred rite of passage for those whose families had generations of fire service. There are varying degrees now of the men and a few qualifying women who are coming into the mix with a less than traditional background. It is the mix of all of these that is intriguing in this study how the new recruits navigate the various spoken and unspoken rules of becoming accepted as trusted peers.
