'The Real Janelle' would be the last music released from Bratmobile for the next six years. I know some people have complained this CD is too short, but remember it's an EP not an LP. The craftsmanship is a big step up from the messy 'Pottymouth'. The production is more clear and Bratmobile are more noisy than ever before. I would have loved if they would have made a full length album during this time, because it seems like they were at their peak here. All the songs are standouts, particularly the wounded and abused 'And I Live In A Town Where The Boys Amputate Their Hearts'. I especially enjoy their cover of The Misfits 'Where Eagles Dare'. Great CD, it's worth every penny. It's short, but it will take a bite out of ya. So let it.

Bratmobile sound like a renegade girl surfing band that make menacing music. I like to think of this sort of brand of indie punk (otherwise deemed "riot grrrl") as the ideal soundtrack for a queer James Bond flick. That flick would be known as The Real Janelle. And #1 off this CD would be the theme. Though considering how most of the Bond themes are usually brooding or downbeat, "Yeah, Huh?" might be a better choice. Spy mysteries, criminal serials, teen flick parodies - they all would do this music some good exposure.

Yeah Huh? is the most beautiful song on the CD, it could cross genres on it's own. The kind of song you can get lost in and find it hard to come back. The music is softer and drowns out the vocals, making it an almost purely emotional experience. And the ripping surfpunk guitars really kick in on my favorite song off this CD- "And I Live in a Town Where the Boys Amputate Their Hearts". Then "Brat Girl" is the foulest song, with lots of caustic cursing.

However there are a couple low points on the CD- "Die" and the cover of "Where Eagles Dare" with a guest vocalist, that guy from the original band (The Misfits). They are nothing special, and just genre standards. They're punky, loud, rowdy, but not as shiny or poppy or fun as the main 4. This might be a nice place to start, but not if you really want to be a fan of this band.

This record is worth whatever price you may have to pay, if not purely for their cover of the Misfits' "Where Eagles Dare" - it's nothing like the original and yet it rocks just as hard. Okay, not as hard as the Misfits, but it's just as good. A must-have for the Bratmobile fan.
On a side note, if you came across this record because you're looking for Misfits' covers, may I suggest the Lemonheads' EP "Spanish Delights" (it's called something to that effect). On it, the 'heads cover "Skulls", in what may be the most hysterical, unlike-the-original cover ever. They also cover the Monkees and New Kids On the Block - you really should find it.
