Book Description

"People who like films and stars of that era, from the 1920s on through the 1950s, I think, would like to have such a personally-written account of some of the highlights of an actress's life. Most picture us all as rich and famous and never hear of another side. I've even thought of the title: The Real Joyce Compton: Behind the Dumb Blonde Movie Image. Sound good? It's a thought." --Excerpt of a letter from Joyce Compton to Michael G. Ankerich, 27 January 1988 The Real Joyce Compton: Behind the Dumb Blonde Movie Image is the story that Joyce Compton, one of the screen's finest comediennes and most versatile actresses, wanted told. Her career, which consisted of an estimated 200 films, stretched from 1925 to 1957. Breaking into films during the silent era, she appeared in a string of ingénue roles, imagining herself as a new Mae Murray, but it was after the beginning of sound that Compton found her niche in comedy. In her own words, she recounts her frustrations over studio politics and shares her experiences of working and socializing with such screen favorites as Clara Bow, Cary Grant, Marlene Dietrich, Joel McCrea, George O'Brien, John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Johnny Mack Brown, Janet Gaynor, and George Raft. Compton opens up about her often overly protective parents, her off-screen romances, her one heartbreaking attempt at marriage, her deep religious faith, and her struggle to support her family after her film career ended. With candor and insight that only someone who was there can share, Compton discusses the transition from silents to talkies; working with incompetent directors in those early sound movies; living on locations; the competition she experienced with the "star" actresses of the studio; freelancing versus working under a studio contact; and the day-to-day life of an actress working in early Hollywood. The Real Joyce Compton begins with a biography of the actress, written by co-author Michael G. Ankerich, based on formal interviews, conversations, and correspondence over their 10-year friendship. The book also contains a detailed filmography of Compton's film appearances and is lavishly illustrated with over 80 photographs, many of which are from Compton's own personal collection.

More About the Author

Michael G. Ankerich admits there have always been stars going around in his head. While still in college, he began interviewing country music stars as a way to meet his favorites. He considers his best conversations to have been with Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette, whom he calls the "holy trinity" of country music queens.

He later became interested in silent films and interviewed many of the remaining actors and actresses from that era. His efforts were published in two books: Broken Silence: Conversations With 23 Silent Film Stars and The Sound of Silence: Conversations with 16 Film and Stage Personalities Who Bridged the Gap Between Silents and Talkies.

Broken Silence included interviews with Lew Ayres, William Bakewell, Lina Basquette, Madge Bellamy, Eleanor Boardman, Ethlyne Clair, Junior Coghlan, Joyce Compton, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Dorothy Gulliver, Maxine Elliott Hicks, Dorothy Janis, George Lewis, Marion Mack, Patsy Ruth Miller, Lois Moran, Baby Marie Osborne, Muriel Ostriche, Eddie Quillan, Esther Ralston, Dorothy Revier, David Rollins, and Gladys Walton.

The Sound of Silence included interviews with Hugh Allan, Barbara Barondess, Thomas Beck, Mary Brian, Pauline Curley, Billie Dove, Edith Fellows, Rose Hobart, William Janney, Marcia Mae Jones, Barbara Kent, Esther Muir, Anita Page, Marion Shilling, Lupita Tovar, and Barbara Weeks.

His most recent book is Dangerous Curves Atop Hollywood Heels: The Lives, Careers, and Misfortunes of 14 Hardluck Girls of the Silent Screen. The Real Joyce Compton: Behind the Dumb Blonde Movie Image, written with the late actress Joyce Compton, was released in July 2009.

He is currently working on a biography of silent film actress Mae Murray and a spiritual memoir, Drag Queens at the County Line and Other Spiritual Adventures.

A former newspaper reporter, Ankerich has written extensively for Classic Images, Films of the Golden Age, and Hollywood Studio Magazine, which featured his interview with Butterfly McQueen (Prissy) on the 50th anniversary of the release of Gone With The Wind.

An art history buff, he is determined to see every Vermeer at least once, whereever they are in the world. He's seen quite a number so far, but there's always one more to track down.

Ankerich lives in Georgia.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Insight Into Classic Hollywood, September 1, 2009

This review is from: The Real Joyce Compton: Behind the Dumb Blonde Movie Image (Paperback)
Some twenty years ago, author Michael Ankerich ended his interview with Classic Film Actress Joyce Compton, by saying her autobiography had yet to find a publisher. Mr. Ankerich persisted, and with the help of Bear Manor Books, THE REAL JOYCE COMPTON is the very readable, insightful product.
The book begins with a very thorough interview with Ms. Compton, whose memory and evaluation of her co stars brings to life Hollywood in the late 1920's and the 1930's. As Ms. Compton moves into telling her own story, she details her childhood and love of her parents, who guided much of her life.
The book works well, in intertwining her film work with her private life (it is not just one of those, "And then I did this movie...). There is reflection on decisions she made, some which did not help either her career or her private life, but that honesty makes Joyce Compton all the more real, and not just the image one remembers from many films.
The book is full of great photographs from her private collection, some of which show her with co stars: Clara Bow, George O'Brien, Loretta Young, Cary Grant, and many others.
The love and friendship between the two authors of this book is apparent, and has produced a book that needs to be in every film lover's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Character Actress Comes to Life in a Remarkable Way!, October 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Real Joyce Compton: Behind the Dumb Blonde Movie Image (Paperback)
I was extremely impressed by "The Real Joyce Compton," the autobiography of Joyce Compton, the legendary character actress of umpteen movies from Hollywood's golden age. The late, great Compton co-authored this book with the talented film historian, Michael Ankerich. I swiftly read their terrific collaboration from cover to cover, totally engaged in each and every page. To my surprise, Joyce comes across as a truly fascinating person, much more complex than I had imagined; she seemed to be at once disarming, wholesome, saucy, intelligent and quite perceptive. Her memories of both her professional and personal lives are always sharp, sometimes very witty, sometimes quite poignant. I can well imagine the vast amount of effort that went into Ankerich's coordination of Compton's many words and thoughts into one volume that flowed throughout. Congratulations to both authors, for creating such a fascinating work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, September 5, 2009
This review is from: The Real Joyce Compton: Behind the Dumb Blonde Movie Image (Paperback)
Though I did not know who Joyce Compton was, the book revealed much about her life and the life of Hollywood in the years between silent movies and talkies. The personal and financial struggles Compton experienced give an insight into the life of actors and their families.
