5.0 out of 5 stars I knew Johnny Bean
What you hear on the Cd is exactly what Johnny was: a prankster,
a h-llraiser and just fun to be around. I think my favorite is the lady selling graveplots and Johnny sounds so interested and sincere. One of my favorite parts of it is that Johnny is using his brother's name---he always had a lot of mischief circulating in his brain. But "pigs" has to be a close...

1.0 out of 5 stars horrible
this is one of the worst CD's I have ever listened to in years. The quality is horrible- the comedy is horrible- any Roy D. Mercer lover will hate this.

One of my favorite parts of it is that Johnny is using his brother's name---he always had a lot of mischief circulating in his brain. But "pigs" has to be a close second, with Johnny expressing so much concern that the pigs be "frisky"
but what a calamity it would be if the pigs harmed the children. I have to admit that it irks me beyond belief that Roy D Mercer claims to have invented the character. Johnny died in 1984----when was Roy D Mercer's first recording released? Roy D Mercer (or whatever his name is )should be ahamed of themselves or at least admit they stole the idea from Johnny.

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest redneck humor ever., December 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Real Leroy Mercer is John Bean (Audio CD)
Funny beyond belief. This man had the quickest wit for raucous prank calls in the history of the art form. Mr. Bean was plagiarized almost totally by "Roy D. Mercer."
Mr. Bean originally made a prank call entitled "Thom McAnn's" using the name Leroy Mercer (hence the plagiarism) concerning a man wanting a pair of boots to be replaced. Unfortunately for the recipient of his calls, the victim usually winds up in a heated debate with Mr. Bean and the result is hilarious.
Mr. Bean has passed away and his sister has helped to preserve his contributions. Without a doubt, Mr. Bean was the inventor of the prank call regarding customer dissatisfaction. As an owner of one of the early "tapes", I was delighted to be able to purchase this C.D.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant , Quick witted!, April 29, 2002
This review is from: The Real Leroy Mercer is John Bean (Audio CD)
Not sure what Jay is talking about here? Poorly done? This is the funniest thing I've ever heard. Always wanted this on CD - THANKS! So many have tried to copy John Bean, very poorly I might add. Possibly Jay has never heard of the originals before. I have had so many people bring me other peoples recordings claiming to be Leroy Mercer, copying his stuff, some word for word, but none were ever close the real thing. There's just no mistaking the true genius of John Bean. This CD should be ranked as one of the best comedy albums of all time. I actually had the good fortune to meet and speak with Jeff Foxworthy when he did a comedy show locally, we talked for a good 5 minutes about THIS CD and how brilliant John Bean was. Don't be mislead! This is the real deal!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Funniest Prank Phone Caller ever!!, December 22, 2000

John Bean is truly the Michaelangelo of the art form of prank telephone calls. I first got a copy of one of "the tapes" about ten years ago, and must have made a hundred copies over the years for my friends. My tape only had three cuts on it, and it sounded like hell. I was amazed to discover this CD with all its additional tracks, and improved (though still noisy) sound quality. The booklet and cover are nice too, describing in detail the circumstances behind each of the capers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowing The Real Leroy Mercer, July 22, 2007
This review is from: The Real Leroy Mercer is John Bean (Audio CD)
I knew John Bean. When he was making these tapes we never dreamed that anyone other than those of us that knew him would ever be listening to them. John was Real and he was exactly like the tapes. He passed away several years ago at a very young age and is missed by all who knew him. He was definately one of a kind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Ole East Tennessee Humor, January 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Real Leroy Mercer is John Bean (Audio CD)
I've heard the bootlegged tapes..people, they were so poor and so stretched that the CD sounds top rate. I suppose you had to have heard the ones I tried listening to back in the 80's. The comedic genius of Mr. Bean comes through on the CD. People out there are trying to compare apples to oranges. I personally thank this group for rescuing the recordings and holding on to them. One hundred years from now, whenever someone discovers them in a vault, I'm proud they'll be hearing the "off-kilter" humor of John Bean. If Johnny Knoxville were trying to record this same stuff back in the old days, it would have come out the same. KUDOS!

4.0 out of 5 stars Huh!, November 14, 2002
This review is from: The Real Leroy Mercer is John Bean (Audio CD)
Ignore the guy from CA below who doesn't know the history and is unnecessarily skeptical. I am from Knoxville, TN and have heard Leroy for YEARS, WAY before Roy D. ever came to life. This is absolutely great stuff! While it's true that it may not sound as "refined" as other prank CD's, this is still a great CD to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grew up on this!, April 4, 2006
This review is from: The Real Leroy Mercer is John Bean (Audio CD)
I have heard this for years on countless tapes. When I was growing up in Knoxville we would listen and laugh. As teens we heard "Leroy" was a convict with his own phone in his cell that would make prank calls... Or that he was a crazy former lawyer, now mad, making prank phone calls all day.

This collection has most of the calls I have heard on it. However, there are more that are not on this CD. Maybe some day they will release another. I know there may have been another call to C&C's that is not on this one, and a funny call to "Mr's LaRue on Minnesota" that's missing.

What makes me mad -- people trying to release bogus, fake CD's and material about Leroy. There is only ONE Leroy Mercer and it is this CD. And if you don't believe that, just wait til my brother gets off work. Someone's a** could get whupped over this!
