Living With Diabetes,
By
This review is from: Real-Life Guide to Diabetes: Practical Answers to Your Diabetes Problems (Paperback)
I remember the day I was first diagnosed with Diabetes. I immediately went to my local bookstore to get information. There were books for Type 1, and Type 2, counting carbs, cooking, and baking with sugar substitutes. But there wasn't a book to answer all of the questions that were popping into my head. A book for "dummies" gave me very general information, no different than the small brochure that my general practitioner gave to me. I needed much more information than that.
Two years after my diagnosis, such a book has been written. REAL-LIFE GUIDE TO DIABETES: Practical Answers To Your Diabetes Problems. Hope Warshaw and Joy Pape are the authors of this amazing book. Hope and Joy are both Certified Diabetes Educators with tons of experience and have been the authors of many books on Diabetes care. Joy is also a Type 1, herself, so she knows the difficulties of living with diabetes (and I mean LIVING). The book is fresh, and new. It isn't laid out like any diabetes book you've read in the past, it flows freely from one subject to another. With the information in boxes, it is easy and fun to read! Full of color pictures, tips, and solutions. Sections included are: Build Your Strong Foundations, Create Your Real-Life Diabetes Plan, and When Life Happens. These are LIVING with Diabetes subjects, and truly the information that is needed for Today's Diabetes. My favorite part was the Wonder? areas. I wish that I'd had these practical answers to all the questions that had been running through my head when I was first diagnosed. These are in boxes throughout the book, just in the right place you are looking for them. But, this book isn't just for the recently diagnosed, as someone who has lived with Diabetes for the last two years, I was able to answer questions that I had not even thought of. "Dealing with Diabetes while on Vacation" comes to mind right away as one of those subjects. I also am putting the "Losing Weight and Keeping it Off" to some good use! The beauty of REAL-LIFE Guide to Diabetes is in the simplicity, but it's approach isn't dumbed down to make you feel like you are an idiot. Just the right answers in the right tone, to make you comfortable in learning more about the disease you are living with. I will recommend REAL-LIFE GUIDE TO DIABETES: Practical Answers To Your Diabetes Problems by Hope Warshaw and Joy Pape to EVERYONE I know!

Hope S. Warshaw and Joy Pape hit the ball out of the park with the following book: Real-Life Guide to Diabetes. Every sentence is a jewel of information. Having learned that I have type 2 diabetes for three years now, I have read many, many books on diabetes covering every diabetic topic that is out there. To get to the information I was looking for, I have had to read chapter after chapter after chapter and even after all that reading, I still did not get exactly what I wanted to know.
In the Real-Life Guide to Diabetes, every page is filled with vital information that every diabetic needs to know. There is not one wasted space in the whole book. It is an easy read with tips and tactics, an orange box Wonder question section, Red Flag boxes of vital information that we need to pay attention to and a green box Psst... section that I refer to as helpful hints. The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes is colorful to the eye, friendly to the diabetic spirit, and one glance through will make you want to take the book home and read it from cover to cover. When I was half way through the Real-Life Guide to Diabetes book, it dawned on me that this book really is a diabetes 101 course because everything that diabetics need to know is between the pages of this book. Nothing was left out. It is all here in one book. The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes is a comprehensive diabetic reference book that will help all diabetics live the best lives they can. You will not be sorry you bought this book. We all need to make time for our good health because if we don't make time for our good health our lack of good health will definitely make time for us. Let the Real-Life Guide to Diabetes help you live a healthy good life for years to come.

All you need to know about diabetes in one place,

This review is from: Real-Life Guide to Diabetes: Practical Answers to Your Diabetes Problems (Paperback)
The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes by Hope S. Warshaw and Joy Pape doesn't take its name lightly. It's chock full of practical, useful information you can integrate into your daily life right now. I've had diabetes for nearly six years and, even though I read everything I can about the disease, no one source has EVERYTHING you need to know all in one place. This book does. From exercise to medication to nutrition, it covers all the bases and then some. You have to think about what you're going to eat, when you're going to exercise, and when you're going to take your medicines. This book will show you how to create an optimum life plan and how to deal with things that come up that can wreak havoc with your plan, such as illness or travel.
The design of the book makes it easy to read. Each chapter has a "What You'll Learn" section right at the beginning. Scattered throughout the guide are sections like "By the Numbers," which provides important statistics; "Wonder," which answers questions about diabetes; and "Tips and Tactics," which tells you how to deal with many aspects of diabetes in plain language that's easy to understand. There's even a "Red Flag" section that provides warnings and cautions people with diabetes need to know. This book is so comprehensive that you'll never have to search for most of the information again. I hope the American Diabetes Association and the two authors update the information regularly. I think the best thing about this book is that it gives people with diabetes hope - hope that, even though they've been diagnosed with diabetes, they can still live a pretty normal life and reduce complications of diabetes.

Excellent primer for the newly diagnosed,

This review is from: Real-Life Guide to Diabetes: Practical Answers to Your Diabetes Problems (Paperback)
I was diagnosed with type 2 four years ago and have read several books about dealing with diabetes. This is the first one I've read that I actually would like to keep on hand as a reference. It covers all of the basics, including how weight loss and medication can control type 2, how insulin resistence develops and progresses, and how to keep tight control of your blood sugar and A1C via exercise and good food choices as opposed to insulin. It also reinforced my own decision post-diagnosis not to take insulin and choose to make lifestyle changes instead. After all of the reading I've done re type 2 diabetes, I didn't think there was anything left to learn, but this book has some really good sections on what you can do as a type 2 diabetic to take control of your disease.
Bonus: it has the best explanation I've heard so far of the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes and info on the new research that indicates they really are two different diseases and should be treated as such. I highly recommend this book as a reference for people who are borderline type 2 or recently diagnosed (or even for type 2 diabetics who are having trouble controlling blood sugar).

Very practical and easy to use.,

As a person with diabetes, what I love best about Real-Life Guide is that it is written in short, easy-to-digest segments. Perfect for me, because I absorb information best in small amounts. Perfect for someone recently diagnosed, who has a zillion questions. Within the text, for example, medical terms are highlighted in yellow and you know to look at a nearby yellow "Definition" sidebar printed in large type. The "Red Flag" sidebars are just what they say they are, and the green "Psst..." sections give you kernels of information you may not have in your arsenal. I've had diabetes for 13 years and immediately investigated the "Tips and Tactics" segments on stress and diabetes burnout. This book is great for those of us who want practical, down-to-earth strategies to help us through the unending demands of daily living with our disease.

The best diabetes title in a long time...,
By
This review is from: Real-Life Guide to Diabetes: Practical Answers to Your Diabetes Problems (Paperback)
It's been a while since I've read such a great title about diabetes. Certainly no other diabetes book I have reviewed is so well laid out, incorporating compelling visuals in full color to complement the easy-to-understand yet substantial content written by two of the most respected figures in today's diabetes education world.
The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes has something for everyone: those with type 2 diabetes (the majority of patients living with this chronic condition) as well as those with type 1 diabetes; those who have been recently diagnosed as well as those who've had diabetes for a while (but can use a refresher). The three sections that make up The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes are proof that the authors know what they are talking about. The 21 chapters constitute a complete reference that touches on diabetes basics (dealt with in section 1, Build Your Strong Foundations), how to manage your diabetes through monitoring, diet, medication and lifestyle changes (covered in section 2, Create Your Real-Life Diabetes Plan) and an advanced section that touches on matters that range from sexuality and traveling with diabetes to health insurance and protecting your rights (discussed in section 3, When Life Happens). All in all, this constitutes a must-read for all people touched by diabetes.

Real - Life Guide To Diabetes.......I think the book is absolutely wonderful. It's informative in a fun way it keeps your intersect, it's 2009. I don't have diabetes but my husband has Type 2 and I pick it up from time to time because I think I worry more about his health than he does.
Great job to Joy Pape and Hope Warsaw I wish them much success they deserve it. The girls left no stone unturned......Again Much Success Phyllis Shulman

Good book for anyone who has questions about diabetes, whether for themselves or for someone they care for. The book arrived in wonderful condition and very quickly. Recomend this seller. I recomend AMAZON for anything that they personally sell. I have always been happy with their service and I would shop with them any time and I do quite often. ( Best for music downloads too. No hassel, works with any program. I once purchased with Itunes and the music is still sitting there on my computer because the program is not compatible. Marie Gros
