This review is from: Real Life (Paperback)
While I initially picked up this book because I'm a huge fan of Melissa "War Witch" Bianco's contributions to the game City of Heroes, I found I really enjoyed this fun, quirky romance.
Real Life reads like a summer date/chick flick...but the good kind. It's a breezy read with memorable characters, witty dialogue, and an empowering (if a bit fantastic) message. The story follows Jessica (Jessie) Sutherland, a opinion writer sent on an Australian rainforest adventure as a story assignment. Teamed with an all-male crew in the woods, clumsy-yet-spunky Jessie is challenged to keep up with the boys and put thru challenges which help her realize she has more inner strength and beauty than she gives herself credit for. She also finds romance in the form of rival columnist and camp-mate, Grant Davidson. While Grant comes off as the most perfect literal male since Edward Cullen, he's still a likeable and charming character. About the only drawback to Real Life is the mixed message of a woman finding her inner strength but, at the same time, being whisked away by Prince Charming. At the point the story leaves the forest, it becomes less Real Life and much more Fantasy, but it still works! If you like quirky characters, easy-flowing & witty dialogue, and dash of romance, Real Life hits the spot. |
