What can i do?, December 27, 2003
This is the second single released from the Beatles Anthology. "Real Love" is a pretty good song, but of course it's not as good as the classic Beatles songs. This song is available on Anthology 2, so the real attraction here is the three otherwise unavailable "b-sides". "Baby's in Black" is a live recording from the Hollywood Bowl. "Yellow Submarine" is a remix of the master take, featuring an unused intro and the sound effects featured more prominently (i.e. louder). "Here, There and Everywhere" is Take 7, with the harmonies from Take 13 superimposed near the end. These aren't essential Beatles recordings, but they are fun to hear if you are a fan of the group.

Mini-Anthology, February 23, 2000
This review is from: Real Love (Audio CD)
Of the two "Beatles Reunion" songs that ended up on the Anthology CD's, "Real Love" is the slighter (to my ears, it bears a strong resemblance to John's "Just Like Starting Over.") Still, it has much of what made the Beatles so memorable--gorgeous melodies that seem like they grew organically, like crystal formations, and almost as lasting. The other three songs are important for Beatles completists, since they do *not actually appear* on any of the Anthology CD's! The first is a good, if unspectacular, live version of "Baby's in Black" with a funny intro by John (actually, most of John's intros were funny, come to think of it). Then comes a working draft of "Yellow Submarine" that is a reason to buy the CD all by itself, with a spoken intro by Ringo and a wider (and wilder) variety of sound effects, including more John Lennon shouting. The CD closes out with a collage of early takes of "Here, There, and Everywhere." This is quite listenable, but omits the chorale-like three-part harmonies that were the song's best asset. (In addition, "Here, There..." sounds very strange coming after "Yellow Submarine," instead of the other way around).

Great Song, February 25, 2005
This review is from: Real Love (Audio CD)
In 1995, the Beatles began working on their "Anthology" project, and I believe this CD serves as a good preview to the set. You get the newly recorded song, "Real Love," and outtakes plus a live version of "Baby's in Black" from the 1965 Hollywood Bowl concert (which, I might add, was not released on the 1977 Hollywood Bowl record, so it is truly unreleased.) I now own this single on CD and vinyl, just because I love the Beatles. "Real Love" is one of John's best songs ever.
