4.0 out of 5 stars The Real Maxaw
Because i am priveleged to own two of these magnificent Blue and Gold Macaws , I was curious to see them "acting". I was not at all disappointed. The wonderful generational story, combined with some of most beautiful scenery on our planet, makes for a super attention getter for all ages of viewers. My only "fear" is that people will want to own one...

Everything is great about this movie UNTIL THE ENDING. DISGUSTING.

Because i am priveleged to own two of these magnificent Blue and Gold Macaws , I was curious to see them "acting". I was not at all disappointed. The wonderful generational story, combined with some of most beautiful scenery on our planet, makes for a super attention getter for all ages of viewers. My only "fear" is that people will want to own one of these big , beautiful birds after seeing the movie, and not do the necessary research to know how to care for them adequately. They require a great deal of time ,love and cleaning up after...as well as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to remain healthy. There are hundreds of Bird Rescue aviaries across the USA, just like the Grandfather's in the movie, who recieve the birds after the owners "can't stand the screaming" and "don't have the time". Buy the movie and not the bird.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great family movie., March 12, 2002
This review is from: The Real Macaw [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A very entertaining movie about a very old parrot named Mac and morrally very educational. A young boy tries to help his family and ends up on a wonderful adventure with a talking parrot. Treasure hunting and pirates and beautiful scenery are all to be expected in this great family movie. My 6 and 8 yr old daughters loved this movie. And I loved it for its good acting and unique story and the great values it was teaching as my children sat spell bound.

This was a very entertaining storyline. It was very similar to the movie "Paulie" in many respects. If you have seen that movie and enjoyed it, you will probably like this one as well. (If you haven't, then I guess you've got two movies to rent!) "The Real Macaw" was an excellent family movie / fantasy / fairy tale rolled up in one. The macaw added a lot of humor to the movie. John Goodman's voice was a good choice for the bird's voice, and his lines were usually funny. We have a macaw, and the attitude of Mac was right on the money. By the way, our macaw liked the movie too!

I loved this movie! While I make a practice of renting most talking animal movies, I esp. take note with the bird movies. This ranks the best. The acting of the humans is passable, but the bird steals the show. Good family fun...enjoy! Cindy I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Adventure With A 150 Year Old Parrot, September 17, 2001
This review is from: The Real Macaw [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Exciting, well-polished and believable story, with wonderful scenery. Encourages problem solving skills, honesty, assertiveness and respect for elders. Enchanting. Kids were fascinated by the pirates, tropical islands and talking parrots. They wanted to hunt for treasure themselves. "It showed me how kids can help solve problems without doing bad things." Best for ages 8 to 12.

2.0 out of 5 stars AWFUL ENDING..MAKES THE WHOLE MOVIE POINTLESS., November 20, 2011
This review is from: The Real Macaw (DVD)
Everything is great about this movie UNTIL THE ENDING. DISGUSTING.
The whole movie is pointless because of the last 10 minutes......
SPOILER ALERT BELOW:
After watching this boy struggle and almost get killed to find this treasure to save his grandfather, the grandfather does not want it and so the boy PUTS IT BACK IN SOME OLD TEMPLE. WHATTTTTTTTTT I JUST WASTED 90 MINUTES WATCHING HIM FIGHT WITH PEOPLE, DIG, SWIM, TO FIND IT.
Also the bird says he is going to stay on the island? So he dumps grandpa to stay..looks like grandpa is going to go to the rest home since he has no money and now no pets so it is easier for them to dump him.
This movie had such potential until the awful ending!
