Review

"With the stories of people proposing over text and asking for a divorce over text, Real Men Don't Text couldn't be timelier. Do yourself a favor and read this book."
Lis Wiehl, New York Times best-selling author and Fox News Legal Analyst

"Michael and Ruthie bring a fresh perspective to the confusing world of dating.
Real Men Don't Text is a game-changer."
Jason Romano, ESPN

"Real Men Don't Text will shift your perspective. It will ask you tough questions you may not want to answer but need to if you truly desire freedom from unhealthy interactions with men. Ruthie and Michael's words will not ensure you go on lots of dates; they will do something better: ensure you go on the right date with the right guy."
Andrea Lucado, 26, Publicist, Nashville

"As a young single doctor who is extremely busy and recently dating, this is the perfect book that reiterates the respect that women deserve and reminds us that RMDT! I've done a lot of texting, but Ruthie is right: when I like a girl, I will always call. Don't let us guys get away with any more lazy texts."
Paul, 29, MD, Louisiana

"Want more confusing, dead-end, text-based relationships? Don't read this book. But if you want to find real love in the time of texting, run to the nearest bookstore or turn on your computer and buy Real Men Don't Text. It's about to become the little black book for our generation."
Rachel, 25, Teacher, Istanbul, Turkey

About the Author

Ruthie and Michael Dean grew up just down the street from one another, but not being fans of convenience, they fell in love long-distance while Ruthie lived in China and Michael lived in Germany. Now happily married, the Deans love to run, take advantage of Sunday coffee dates (without technology), and can often be spotted driving around Nashville in Michael's classic Ford truck. You can learn more about Michael and Ruthie, and share your own stories of dating, love, and romance on Ruthie's blog, ruthiedean.com, or on Twitter @MichaelDean10 or@Ruthie_Dean.

I am 51 years old and was incredibly disturbed to learn about the low standards ladies now hold for the "men" in their lives. Having raised some real men (if I do say so myself) I would smack any of them who thought texting at the last minute and never calling or making plans was a normal way to relate to a lady. It grieves me to know there are women who have lowered their standards to avoid scaring a "man" off.

The authors, a husband and wife team, do a great public service by pointing out such formerly obvious things as the fact that a real man will not be scared off by standards, but will rise to the challenge of meeting them. A real man will pursue something he truly wants--so if he's just casually texting and never makes plans or calls, you need to accept that he's not relationship material.

I bought a copy of this book for my church library. If I could, I'd buy one for every young single in my life and maybe even hit them over the head with it. Ladies, stop settling for nothing. Set some standards and see who is willing to try to meet them. Good men still exist. And mediocre "men" may become real men with a little encouragement to man up. Stop being easy and hold out for real love.

One of the things I did not realize before reading "Real Men Don't Text: A New Approach to Dating" is that it's written for women. I made the assumption that since it was written by a couple, it would deal evenly with male and female approaches to dating, but that was not the case. That being said, as a man, I still really enjoyed this book. Throughout its 14 chapters, it's a captivating read as the authors write in a very conversational tone. Yet, in the midst of their candid storytelling, they provide practical advice to anyone involved in the dating game.

I found this book to deal with current and relevant dating issues, including purity, body image, red flags for a bad date, turnoffs, finding the right man, and online dating. The bold lists in the chapters make for a quick and practical takeaways. Furthermore, this book is written with a Christian perspective (which I believe is important to this topic); however, the manner in which they deal with faith allows this book to be read by any person (believer or not) without feeling uncomfortable. I thoroughly enjoyed the chapter summaries "in 140 characters or less," too. I thought that was quite creative and fitting given the topic. One of my favorite lines, and perhaps an appropriate summary of the book, was, "She had traded in her desire to be with the right guy for a desire to be with someone right now." If you are tired of that being true in your life, this is the book for you to help break that cycle.

There were a couple things I wish were done differently within these pages, too. First, as mentioned, this is a book written for women. I feel like there may be a missed opportunity here as men could benefit heavily from their advice as well.

I started out liking this book till the male author advised women that it was improper to tell a man you're seeing "I gotta pee." It's so sexist to tell women that it's more advisable to say you need to use the restroom instead. I would never want to be with a man so sensitive to the fact that a woman has some of the same bodily functions as a man. So for a book about texting how does a man divert the attention to how a woman should be proper to a man? Because when more on point with the idea that a man isn't really interested if he's texting, the book was more agreeable, but when going off point it just gets sexist.

Summary: Have you ever found yourself waiting two or more days for that guy you have a crush on to text back? Does he only ever text you and never calls? Are you feeling a little confused about the fact he can't send more than a text to invite you out? Well if so maybe this book might open your eyes to the fact he isn't head over heels for you. A guy who only texts might be interested, but the best way to confirm he is to get him to call. Ruthie provides insight for women from her own experiences, and her husband, Michael gives a small dose of a male perspective.

Characters: Well the book features the two authors talking about their relationship to one another, and other stories to bring to light the message they are presenting. It seems the authors' avoid giving too much away about their personal lives. Ruthie Dean talks about her impure past before meeting Michael, and says that she went as far as she could get without having sex, but when talking about her regrets she just leaves it at "kissing outside bars.

In a day and age when the moral edifices of societal values have been crumbling like nine pins, and when texting, and some would even argue sexting, have been more of the norm than an exception, Real Men Don't Text by Ruthie and Michael Dean is a timely book that should help us to gird our loins and help us see where we have gone wrong.

The importance of modern gadgets and electronic items in our daily lives cannot be over emphasized. Yet, we have become too dependent on them that they have begun to slowly eat into the vitals of human society. Realizing the confusion and chaos it has created, the authors have offered valuable insights on how one can avoid the perils of false intimacy of on-screen connection and enjoy a true love life instead.

The 240-page book offers to help women understand just what men are thinking and how to attract Mr. Right. It provides practical advice and how to deal relationship matters, and gives a fresh perspective to the confusing world of dating.

The book contains 14 chapters:
1: Real Men Don't Text
2: Real Women Don't Text Back
3: Real Women and Great Sex
4: Real Men Wait for Sex
5: Real Women Embrace Beauty
6: Real Men and the Real You
7: Real Red Flags
8: Real Turn offs
9: Real Women Stop Making Excuses
10: Real Men Grow Up
11: Real Women Give Nice Guys a Chance
12: Real Connection
13: Real Women, Messy Bedrooms, and Hope
14: Real Love

The authors have treated the subject with such clarity of thought that there is no room for ambiguity. Though the book is mainly written for women, there is enough meat for men to take it home too.
