4.0 out of 5 stars The world of Myst, but not the feel of Myst
It's kind of neat and novel, as a longtime fan, to freely wander and explore the worlds of Myst in real-time 3D. But when it comes to actually playing the game, I still prefer the original Mac version (NOT the "Masterpiece" version, which I've also reviewed here on Amazon).

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware: needs 3D video card or it won't launch
Nothing in the product information for this game warned me that it would not work if you don't have a 3D video card. I had all the other system requirements, but not that one, so it wouldn't launch. It is totally worthless to me. I threw my money away buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The world of Myst, but not the feel of Myst, April 11, 2005

It's kind of neat and novel, as a longtime fan, to freely wander and explore the worlds of Myst in real-time 3D. But when it comes to actually playing the game, I still prefer the original Mac version (NOT the "Masterpiece" version, which I've also reviewed here on Amazon).

Movement through the 3D world isn't always smooth. The camera often doesn't point in an appropriate direction. (When you ascend a spiral staircase in real life, you keep your eyes pointed up the stairs, don't you? This doesn't.) You sometimes become frustratingly stuck because the computer thinks you shouldn't be able to move at the exact angle you want to travel in. And you automatically move at a surprisingly brisk pace, as if you were always running; following the original game's instructions to act as if you were really there, I'd be moving a lot more slowly and cautiously.

The original had a timeless, artistic quality which is lost in this 3D version. Each scene was like a carefully-composed photograph or painting; now it's less of a gallery and more like, well, a first-person shooter without the shooter.

Recommended for dedicated Myst fans, or for anyone who can't find (and use) either the original Mac version (best) or the PC Masterpiece version (second best). But by no means is it the ultimate Myst experience.

It's funny what ten years of technology can do to an idea. I know people are tired of new versions of Myst (Masterpiece Edition, Special Edition, DVD, sequels, etc.) but this one really the best. If your computer can push the pixels the game really moves ahead of the pack. It looks great, even compared with the more recent rerendered versions. It gives you a genuine sense of place that was missing from previous attempts, and it runs on my old G3 Mac.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better in 3-D!, July 28, 2004

I played this game first on my Mac LC-III and loved it. It is still my favorite computer game. I just played this version on my g4 iMac and it's even better than before. This is the ideal game for people who don't want to shoot, kill, die, etc., but love solving puzzles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Very Good, December 3, 2007

All I can say is excellent, I've played the original and this is better, smoother, Can see allot more detail, On a Intel Mac with Mac OS 10.5.1 it ran very fast and without the patch. The Depth of Detail was great especially the rain in the stone ship age. Also see the passage of time if you stay in an age long enough from day to night to day again. The Rime Age was good and different puzzle to the rest, Good lead-in to Riven.

The name Myst basically says it all but with this it got allot better, This is the standard other games should follow.

4.0 out of 5 stars iMac owners: BEWARE!, January 24, 2003

If you have an older mac with a video or graphics card that is less then 16 MB, this game will not run on your mac. I have a slot-loading iMac G3 and I did not find out until I tried to play the game that my graphics card was not powerful enough. While the game still plays, just about everything is turned a pink color and most of the scenery is partially transparent. This makes game play very difficult and frustrating and at least one age is impossible to play. If you've got a 16+ MB graphics card, then go for it. This game is very fun. But if you're not sure or you don't, then don't bother.

Myst is an amazing beautiful puzzle game. Real Myst is a Great update to the classic. The game is EXACTLY the same but the images and interface have been updated to provide a full "virtual reality" experience. If you have not ever played Myst before, you should get Real Myst instead of the original version.

If you have already played Myst, there is NOT much replay value here except for eye candy aspects.

I'm not the sort who likes FPS or violent, gore filed games. I'm attracted to games that make you think. RealMyst ran very well on my 1.25 ghz G4 PowerMac on 10.2.6, the graphics were great. But I found the story to be very dark and creepy. Most of the time I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do next. Within a few days it was off my hard drive.I really wanted to like RealMyst, but it just wasn't for me. YMMV.

really the game just isn't all that great to begin with. So when thy come out with the remake of the it and then add somemore levels and better graphics, you might think it is good? Wrong.
