Review

"Copeland has weritten another soon-to-be classic, this time in the application of the option-pricing theory to corporate finance. Real Options are central to many practical problems faced by corporations and entrepreneurs each day,a nd this book provides an excellent set of tools and examples for tackling these challenges."

"Real options are everywhere. In fact, you are holding one in your hand. Take it from me that reading this book will yield you huge dividends. I suggest you exercise your options immediately."

I'm feeling very frustrated with this book, and here's why. The text contains sample questions, and directs to a website for the solutions. The website requires registration in order to access the material. After filling out the necessary details, I received an email from the publisher stating that I did not qualify as I am not a lecturer. I pointed out that the text claims to be a practitioners guide, not a lecturers guide. After numerour emails back and forth I've given up - I'll return it instead.

Most curiously I was never offered to purchase the material, so I can't even feel conned - just pissed-off.

Is a good book, however, be aware that you need a very good foundation in finance and valuation. Do not pretend to learn ROA with gaps doing a simple NPV excersice. THE BAD its really a shame been a Practitioner's guide not found the end chapter solutions to the problems, even giving you a supposed internet address to obtain it. The address does not exists.

I would rate this 5 stars from a practitioner's perspective, which is the intended audience. But, in terms of actual coverage of real options, Trigeorgis is better. However, Copeland and Antikarov do a great job with this book in introducing real options. There are sufficient examples and you get a good understanding of the topic off the bat. Copeland is a very good author, and he is one of my favorites. It's a good thing that there is a revised edition already, because the first one just had many typos.

As a finance PhD student, I occasionally want to read up on a new topic that may be useful for my research. I need something that is easy reading for someone with limited background on the subject matter, but advanced enough so I actually learn something! This is a great book.

The book is constructed like so many finance books written by consultants. It starts out great with some good examples that hook you on the method's use. But then it seems to intentionally leave out steps in the actual calculation of the real options valuation. The obvious answer is that you then need to hire Mr. Copeland and his consulting team to do the work for you. I got to the point where I couldn't bridge the logic between say step 3 and step 4. So, I went to a colleague of mine who has substantial real options experience. His answer was, "They left out some steps. You can't get from step 3 to step 4 without knowing the steps in between".

That's more the rule than the exception with books written by consultants hoping to be hired as experts. They have little incentive to show you all their moves. If they do, you won't hire them.

If the book is used in conjunction with a college class where the instructor can bridge the gaps, it has some descent information. Otherwise, save your money.

I'm still looking for a good Real Options book. From the reviews, the Real Options book written by Martha Amram and Nalin Kulatilaka appears to be the same self promotion game.

I use this book as a required book in a course on my graduate study. It is hard to understand and writen like a novel. However, it is very up-to-date. Readers should have a bit strong background on options, finance and investment.

This is the best book on real options analysis available anywhere.
I was the topic of my master thesis and this book was very useful.
Great if you don't want to spend all day solving lengthy equations.
