5.0 out of 5 stars Stitchie's Born-Again Debut!, September 22, 2000
This review is from: Real Power (Audio CD)
Reggae, like all forms of music, can get monotonous when one follows the same tried and true patterns over and over again. It's a fine line- the classic Studio One rhythms, for example, can still sound good today if used creatively. To go completely in the other direction, creating from the ground up without regards to what others are doing, usually produces most creative results. That's exactly what Stitchie has done here. Fusing bits of jazz, gospel, soul and rock with the main ingredient of reggae , he's delivered a musical masterpiece. The opening track, "Thank You Lord", is a beautful prayer-like testimony delivered soulfully by Stitchie who is accompanied by angelic background vocals and dubwize production. Check out the bouncy jazz figures that adorn "Shopping" as Stitchie combines singing with chanting in this song about aquiring the things of God, not material things, but wisdom and grace. You can't help but smile when you hear this playful but powerful tune. Live musicianship is prevalent throughout, including Fitzroy Bennett who displays blessed artistry on the guitar. His playing provides so much color and tastefulness throughout that it makes one rethink the function of the reggae guitarist. Though rythmically soild in the traditonal reggae sense, Bennett wails with rocking fervor, for example at the end of "Solid Rock"- very tasteful and powerful. How about that nice little jazz solo on "Shopping"? Another of the many highlights is "Do Them No More" in which Stitchie sings of the born-again experience with lyrics like "I'm a brand new person, brand new life, will do them no more- some things I used to do". At one point in this tune, Stitchie trades vocals licks with Shledon Bernard's flute to joyous effect- very cool! "Cup Of Life" is a sweet, melodic song in which Stitchie sings of his thirst for the Lord. "War" is rock-reggae with soaring backing vocals and rythmic chanting to encourage all Christian soldiers, "whether near or far". It gets so powerful, you wonder if your speakers will be able to handle the shear energy pouring into them! "My Rock" is a gorgeous hymn with a soothing nyabinghi-like pulse and "Give I Strength" has a classic reggae feel yet is done creatively. THIS IS AN AWESOME CD! Give praises unto the Father through His Son Jesus Christ! Hallelujah! IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS CD, I SUGGEST YOU ORDER IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 years later still my number 1 CD, August 4, 2006
This review is from: Real Power (Audio CD)
I bought this CD on a trip to Jamaica out of curiousity. The CD cost more than it did in the USA, but I NEVER REGRETED IT. I NEVER got into the beats of Gospel music, as a christian (funny) but when I heard Stitchie's new tunes fused in a modern day beat with spiritual words of enlightenment w/o too much screaming and repetitive tones I was blown away. There was no screaming like kirk Franklin, no older penticostal banging of tamborines, no old catholic tunes to put me in a solemn mood, just rocking, jazz swinging, glorious clean reggae with a powerfull message. 2 years later I love this more than my other CDS, salsa, bangra, R&B, soul, techno, disco, cumbia, Kompa, Soca, Classical Piano, Arabic, etc. nothing in my musical collection is as valued as this CD.
