4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to chemistry for this age!

3.0 out of 5 stars Haven't been able to use yet
I wasn't sure what age group this was for, but I bought it for my 4yo son. He said "why does the cover look like fun, but on the inside it isn't?" So go figure. My husband and I are both chemists, so I can't wait for the day when he becomes more interested in chemistry, but I think that won't be for a while. In our case, 4 was too young for this book. Also, there are...

I am a homeschooling mom with a science background. My daughter was asking many chemistry questions but I thought she would be too young to understand acids, bases, DNA, polymers, etc. at her age (6yo 2nd grader). I was wrong. The way things are presented in this book makes teaching tough concepts simple to this age group. My daughter especially enjoyed how atoms are displayed and used throughout the book. They are made to be almost like a cartoon character. They have the correct amount of arms depending on how many bonds they are capable of (hydrogen has one arm, carbon has four, and so on). They also have conversations such as saying hello or goodbye to other atoms during reactions. This was my daughters favorite unit for the year. By the time we had completed the book, she had a good understanding of the concepts and was able not only to present acids and bases at a science fair, but also field additional questions afterwards. Others who saw her work told her they did not understand what she was talking about until they were in high school. The reason I give this only 4 stars is because of the accompanying lab book and teachers manual (available through the publishers website). In order to get the most from this book, the labs really need to be performed as well. This book, although good on it's own, does not have the same impact as it does after the experiments. However, I found the teacher's manual was not quite up to the quality of this book (I was glad I had a science background). Despite this downfall, I would still highly recommend this book (and corresponding lab book / teacher's manual).

5.0 out of 5 stars Real science....real fun, April 5, 2009

We absolutely love this book. The pictures are wonderful - colorful and cute. My kids love the silly faces on the different atoms. Even my 4-yr-old will say "look, there's sodium attaching to chlorine", because he remembers which color and face goes with which atom.

The book itself is hardbound and the pages are bright and glossy. All around beautiful book.

This is not baby chemistry - it's advanced stuff but written in a way kids can understand. We're really enjoying the things we're learning and most importantly, they're retaining it. You do need the teacher's manual and student text in order to get the lab stuff. Or if you're really creative you could make up labs on your own. I bought 1 student book and the kids verbally tell me their thoughts and observations. The publisher does give permission to photocopy the student labs as well, so that can save you some money.

My only complaint is that the book is so short. I wanted this to last a year, but we got done in 2 months.

I will be using all of her books. I think it is the best science program out there

My 9YO son wants to be aeronautical engineer and decided he wanted to start studying NOW! He needs to study Physics and Chemistry. I searched everywhere for age appropriate books for him and these were the only ones I could find. When we received them, I was thrilled to see they were exactly what we needed. He loves reading them, they are entertaining and easily understood. It's been great revision for me, and I'm learning new things too! It's wonderful to have books from which to teach your kids that are fun. I highly recommend them for kids 7-12.

Since the day we received this book, my 1st grader has not been able to put it down!
This is a terrific book to start your elementary students on science!
We will continue with the entire elementary series!
Many thanks to Dr. R.W. Keller! Well done.

This book with lab book has been a God sent for laying out how to approach this subject for the young chemist. Pro:My son loved the lab lessons and I found it very easy to progress through the subject in a logical manner. Con:I didn't feel it was absolutely complete but it came pretty dang close. I was able to fill in the gaps with library books and some experiments.

All in all a very good resource for home-schooling parents - we have bought the next level and plan on doing it next year.

Homeschooling an extremely intelligent and inquisitive 6-year-old is a challenge to say the least. Most science curricula created for elementary age kids is extremely simplistic, vague, and sometimes even dead wrong. Kudos to Dr. Keller for creating a chemistry book that my son eagerly looked forward to working with each week - he loved it so much that we breezed through the whole book in less than 4 months. My son learned enough about chemistry that he wowed his physician grandfather with a good grasp acids/bases, molecular structure and atomic symbols.

Our son loves this book. He had been asking about matter and we needed to find a book that was suitable for his age. We found this book at the SF Exploratorium and loved it; however, the price was more than this one that Amazon offered. We purchased this and our son has gone back to the book time and time again re-reading all that is in it. He even asked his Science Teacher what anti-matter was.

I love this series! It makes science interesting for little ones. We started with Biology and are moving into Chemistry. My kids are 6 and 4 and it holds there interest (chapters are short!) The workbook is a little above them right now, I'll come back to that in a few years. I paired the Biology text with some science centers to emphasize the info.

This book is great for my two kids ages 4 and 6. They are short lessons that don't confuse them with too much information.
