A good, emminently readable novel about what happens when fantasy becomes reality,

This review is from: Real (Paperback)
Greg Burns is a middle-aged, once successful TV actor. Bored by life at home with his partner and 10-yr old daughter and frustrated by the waning of his career, he falls into a fantasy relationship with a much younger playwright, Sally, attracted by her carefree and seductive lifestyle among the up-and-coming London "arty" set in which she lives. But the proverbial hits the fan when the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll world into which she allows him to wander collides with the home life that, when it comes to it, he doesn't want to lose. This book is overlong at times in its descriptions of places and people, and the self-consciously clever and witty tones employed by the writer often irritate. But nevertheless, Stephanie Merritt is able to draw two unsympathetic characters with great authenticity, leaving you to feel that you know these people, or if not, then others just like them, and their individual approaches to life stay in the mind well after the book has been put back on the shelf.
