Editorial Reviews

Three prisoners escaped Alcatraz ... or maybe not. Explore the fascinating true tale behind one of history s most infamous prison breaks in The Real Story: Escape From Alcatraz, available on DVD June 15 from Infinity Entertainment Group. Thought you knew the whole story? The Real Story breaks myths and challenges convention with first-hand facts, classified files, meticulous re-creations and little-known back-stories of legendary events. On the night of June 11, 1962, three prisoners convicted bank robbers Frank Lee Morris and brothers Clarence and John Anglin achieved the impossible, breaking out of Alcatraz, a.k.a. 'The Rock,' the world s most impregnable prison. Or did they? Their absence was discovered during a routine morning count. Strenuous efforts to track down the convicts proved futile. But were they actually free ... or lost in a doomed escape? The Real Story: Escape From Alcatraz recounts the true tale behind the break-out, featuring interviews with key individuals, including Darwin Coon, the inmate who assisted them, the wardens who discovered them missing and the FBI agents who tried to track them down.

Overall, I liked this video. It seems factual, however, there are still many uncertainties and unknowns about the real escape. Possibly too much of the video focused on a guy making a simulated replica of the lifeboat used in the escape. It was somewhat boring, and highly theoretical. The video also doesn't explore enough different possible scenarios for the escape. For example, somebody could have met those escapees somewhere in the Bay with a Boat and took them to shore. The video suggests that more than likely the escapees drowned, however what about more other theories that could point to them having made a successful escape. There were certain parallels to the Clint Eastwood movie, "Escape from Alcatraz." That was interesting. It was worth the few dollars I paid for it, but not anything more. There is too much overplay of doubt, skepticism, and uncertainty all throughout the video. So, if they didn't make it, why were the bodies never found? Years later a submersible could have looked for signs of the bodies. Why hasn't anybody ever done it?
Well, in summary, if you have about an hour of your time to spend, it was amusing to watch. That's about it. Nothing exciting. Sort of bland and uninspiring. So, that's it. Hope this helps.

The Real Story: Escape from Alcatraz is a documentary originally shown on the Smithsonian Channel, about the daring escape of three convicted bank robbers from the infamous Alcatraz prison on June 11, 1962. When they were discovered to be missing, a massive attempt was launched to track them down, to no avail. Did they find freedom? Or did they lose their lives in an ultimately doomed attempt to flee their isolated prison? The Real Story: Escape from Alcatraz lives up to its title through interviews with people ranging from Darwin Coon, the inmate who assisted the escapees, to the wardens who realized they were missing, to the FBI agents assigned to track them down. Exciting and dramatic, The Real Story: Escape from Alcatraz is a worthy addition to public library DVD shelves. PG, 47 min.

After just returning from San Francisco and taking the tour of Alcatraz this film is one of the best as it includes information given during the tour along additional interesting information. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the escape details.
