Book Description

May 1, 1999 Rogue Warrior
Richard Marcinko first exploded out of the clandestine world of special forces/unconventional warfare with his #1 "New York Times" bestselling autobiography "Rogue Warrior(R)." Now, after coauthoring five consecutive "New York Times" bestselling Rogue Warrior novels based on the exploits of his SEAL Teams, he calls upon the warriors who served by his side to tell their own stories. "The Real Team" tells it like it is: how highly motivated individuals come to the Teams, how they train, and how they fight in the four corners of the globe.

From the sea, from the air, or from the land -- SEAL Teams attack the enemy from any direction, any time, with weapons ranging from a K-bar knife to an AK-47. Here, for the first time the real life models for such characters as Indian Jew, "Doc" Tremblay, Duckfoot Dewey, the Golddust Twins and Prince Valiant narrate their journeys from the civilian world to BUD/S training, their first experiences under fire, and how they turned from newbies to seasoned veterans, from loyal U.S. servicemen to rogue warriors whose only rule was that the warrior does not give up. Ever.

Thomas Capel, the real life counterpart of Nasty Nicky Grundle, remembers the day he turned down an appointment to the Naval Academy in order to finish his BUD/S training, and his first combat experiences in Nicaragua: "I'm standing in waist-deep water. There's no cover or concealment. I dropped the gun down, reloaded the weapon and came up shooting. The Sandinistas are caught between fire in front of them and off to the right side. Within the first couple of seconds, I'm laying down 200 rounds of ammunition. I was cutting down trees."

Steve Hartman, the fictionalized StevieWonder, talks about how it felt to become a member of Red Cell: "Being part of the Teams was like going home. After all those years in the Navy, it was fantastic. The Teams are warriors. There's community, loyalty, dedication. And anything goes."

"The Real Team" also reveals the Rogue Warrior's secrets for Team selection and Team Maintenance. From setting up an ambush to making a HAHO -- high altitude, high opening -- parachute jump, from the Philippines to Desert Storm, the stories in the book are about real men and real missions, and about the SEAL mentality of teamwork, training, loyalty, and never-say-die aggression. For it is the spirit of the real Teams that shaped these extraordinary individuals and positioned them for success -- in every battlefield and every endeavor they would face in life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Even hardcore aficionados of the hairy-chested, adrenaline-fueled Marcinko and John Weisman Rogue Warrior novels (Rogue Warrior: Option Delta) will likely be disappointed by this medley of thumbnail, hero-worshipful autobiographies by 10 men associated with SEAL Team SIX, here identified as models for fictional characters in the highly successful series. Purporting to be an insiders guide to successful corporate team-building but overflowing with fulsome unsolicited testimonials for Marcinko, this testosterone-laden tribute is little more than an advertising ploy. Despite the seeming navet of these narratives, each prefaced with anecdotes from the Rogue Warrior himself, the small-town-boy-makes-good-and-saves-the-world theme quickly blurs into homogeneity. The not-so-subliminal message is that Marcinko is the worlds greatest corporate team builder, and the entire book becomes a commercial for the Rogue Warriors planned CrossRoads Training and Development Center for corporate leadership development. Readers with the right stuff will feel burned by this blatant exercise in self-promotion.

Col. David H. Hackworth, USA (Ret.) author of About Face: The Odyssey of an American Warrior Bull's eye! Right on target. It makes Tom Clancy's stuff read like Bambi. It's rude and crude, gritty and U.S. Navy SEAL bad. -- Review

3.0 out of 5 stars Very little hoppin' and boppin', November 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Real Team: Rogue Warrior (Hardcover)
I've read all of the Rogue Warrior books, plus the Marcinko book on leadership. I was hoping this book would be about non-fictional accounts of the missions in which these SpecOps warriors participated. However, there is very little here on missions except for oblique references, probably to classified missions. Mostly it covers why each got into the SEALS, and how they enjoyed working under Marcinco due to his management abilities and his confidence in his troops. This is a good backgrounder if you're a manager and want to know how to lead the troops, and it fits in with the Rogue Warrior's other management books. But you'll be disappointed if you were looking for shootin' and lootin', in which case you should stick to the Rogue's fiction books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical Rogue book, May 9, 2002
By
Mike "Squirrel Nutkin" (Fairfax, Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
The Real Team looks at some of the people Dick Marcinko has worked with over the years and lets you see the real person, not the version which ends up in the fictional "Rogue Warrior" series. This book is a good comapnion not only to the "Rogue" series, but it also works well with the other two non-fiction books Mr. Marcinko has written. If you want a lot of action, this probably isn't the book you want. If you want some background and history, then get this one to go next to all your other Rogue books.
