Very little hoppin' and boppin',
By A Customer
This review is from: The Real Team: Rogue Warrior (Hardcover)
I've read all of the Rogue Warrior books, plus the Marcinko book on leadership. I was hoping this book would be about non-fictional accounts of the missions in which these SpecOps warriors participated. However, there is very little here on missions except for oblique references, probably to classified missions. Mostly it covers why each got into the SEALS, and how they enjoyed working under Marcinco due to his management abilities and his confidence in his troops. This is a good backgrounder if you're a manager and want to know how to lead the troops, and it fits in with the Rogue Warrior's other management books. But you'll be disappointed if you were looking for shootin' and lootin', in which case you should stick to the Rogue's fiction books.

This review is from: The Real Team: Rogue Warrior (Hardcover)
Dick comes back in this new book. He spills his guts about all the shooters in his awesoem books. His shoters tell you some real life stories of them in action. Everything from Nam to the Gulf. If you have ever read any of dicks books and wondered who Pick,Boomerang,Nasty and Nod were this is the book for you.

Not your typical Rogue book,
By Mike "Squirrel Nutkin" (Fairfax, Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Real Team: Rogue Warrior (Rogue Warrior Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Real Team looks at some of the people Dick Marcinko has worked with over the years and lets you see the real person, not the version which ends up in the fictional "Rogue Warrior" series. This book is a good comapnion not only to the "Rogue" series, but it also works well with the other two non-fiction books Mr. Marcinko has written. If you want a lot of action, this probably isn't the book you want. If you want some background and history, then get this one to go next to all your other Rogue books.

The Real Team, The Consummate Professional,
This review is from: The Real Team: Rogue Warrior (Hardcover)
I found this book to be very benefitial. While Dirty Dick does the intros, It is in his giving his men a moment of glory, that provides the insight into what makes a power team effective that is the key here. For the manager looking at building a power team for his firm, this book gives insight into the real individuals that Cmdr. Marcinko chose to be a part of his real teams... SeAL Six and Red Cell, and why he chose them. I had the priviledge of working with these guys while in the Marines in the mid-late 80's. They were every bit as crazy and effective as the Old Man stated they were. By the way I have a personally signed copy of the book by ole' Dirty Dick himself... makes it that much sweeter. Hoo-Yah!

Deeper Please,

This review is from: The Real Team: Rogue Warrior (Hardcover)
From the first words of Rogue Warrior, I was hooked. And while I am a very big Marcinko fan, The Real Team lacks depth. Each interview is so vague that you are left wanting more. I am salavating for Denny Chalker to go more indepth about this over-the-beach mission into Haiti. And in some places, I must admit that it sounds like a big kiss @$$ to Dick. When the add for this book came out, I was so excited because I thought we were going to find out much more about Steve Hartman, Doc Tremblay, and Chalker, but where was Chris Caracci in all this?

Great stories from a group of skilled and dedicated soldiers told in the only way they know how, with honesty, brutality and in some cases a sense of humor. This is a fast read that kept me enthralled because of the pace of the book. The stories are long enough to give you some detail and the situations and short enough that there are no lapses of boredom. It is a great book for non-fiction action of some of great warriors who really loved what they were doing.

Needed more ' real life' stories in The Real Team,
By
This review is from: Rogue Warrior: The Real Team (Audio Cassette)
I've read 5 of Marchinkos books over the last 18 months and he writes great stuff. The stories are well described and each reads like an spec. ops. mission that was only recently de-classified.The guys he works with all have unique personalities and backgrounds but plenty of motivation. I bought this book to learn a bit more about who joins the team...and (more importantly) to hear them describe their best/worst missions. Each guy must have a mission that they look back upon?? Beyond just their upbringing, I was hoping to read more of their 'lives on the edge'. I got only a little of that. If you have friend or family looking at the military, this is certainly the book for them.

For Warrior's,

It think what is most appealing about Demo Dick's books is that they are written with such an extremist, gut wrenching, knife-clenched-in-the-teeth style that we often don't see in modern military, archetypal hero stories. Most of the available media is aimed at people who have no idea about what really goes on in the military, or what Specwar forces are really capable of. They make it seem as though all Specwar ilk are troubled, guilt-ridden loners whom merely perform their duties out of some idealistic, "live free or die" BS. Marcinko shows how these guys really are...quiet professionals who enjoy a hard days work and are basically just blue collar guys. So raise a glass of Bombay in honor of the craftiest frogman around!

Sorry, Dick, it's Doom on the Reader time...,

This review is from: The Real Team: Rogue Warrior (Hardcover)
I have read every book in the Rogue Warrior series, and am disappointed in this one, to say the least. Looks to me like Dickie took the easy way out on this one. The number of team members profiled here is noticeably minimal, and the choices are odd, with some more unfamiliar names present while expected names are glaringly absent. The stories lack depth and detail and who cares how many brothers and sisters the guys had? Even the writing is bigger to fill more pages with this fluff. If you're going to delegate the writing, train the writers, Dear Rogue!
