Editorial Reviews

This is the great forgotten Bobby Bare album. Recorded at a time of intense fracture with RCA Victor (Bare would indeed leave the label and sign with Mercury before these recordings saw release) The Real Thing limped briefly onto the market in 1970 before vanishing for decades. It shouldn't have been that way. Album highlights The Chicago Story, Barbara Joy and Maggie (I Wish We'd Never Met) are the equal of any of Bare's greatest moments, poignant, passionate and surprising - further journeys into Bare's unique suburban gothic symphony. Also included is Bare's solid 1973 LP I Hate Goodbyes/Ride Me Down Easy (with contributions from Shel Silverstein and Billy Joe Shaver) and a clutch of excellent (and relevant) extra tracks. This deluxe edition is remastered from the original master tapes and presented with exclusive liner notes and rare photos. Both albums are reissued for the very first time. 20 page full colour booklet with exclusive liner notes and rare photos.

Im not sure why no reviews have been posted this album was release a week or so ago and sold out instantly. Im thinking the amazon carpetbaggers bought it up hoping they could resell it for mega bucks when its unavailible(amazon stop supporting carpet baggers please)ok on to the album. A Bare masterpiece of interpretation-Singer of Sad Songs is just amazing-Bare put everything he had into the delivery. I was going to do a track by track but the whole album is amazing just amazing. Do yourself a favor buy it before its gone(or before the stinking low life carpetbaggers buy em all). This is an album for all -Bare fans or country fans or music fans. This is a desert island essential. Omni has reissued some fine albums and the way to keep them reissuing these great artists and albums is to purchase CDs and throw away those damn IPODS. Nothing beats reading liner notes and placing that cD or Vinyl in the player. A final note-the more product on the market means less money for those damn carpetbaggers.Sincerely a Bobby Bare fan.

When I first heard "The Chicago Story" by Bobby Bare, I thought that it was one of the most depressing cheater songs that I had ever heard. It was at once both intriguing and morbid. Bobby always gave a great reading to this kind of song but the reading here is particularly sad. Could that be because at the time the recording was made (1969), Bobby was going through his own upheaval with his record label RCA.
"The Chicago Story" was issued on an LP album Titled "The Real Thing" which was finally issued months after Bobby left the label for Mercury. This album, overlooked for years, must go down as a classic Bare album. Another overlooked gem here is the Eddie Noak song "Barbara Joy' which reminds me of "The Long Black Veil". "Maggie (I wish We'd Never Met)" is a cautionary tale about confusing love and lust. There is also a great version of "Sunday Morning Coming Down" which opens with a great instrumental fade up. It's great to see this neglected album back in print.
But this is a twofer CD and also included is a 1973 RCA comeback album "I Hate Goodbyes/Ride Me Down Easy" which features a tongue in cheek Shel Silverstein song "You Know Who". Even though this was recorded during a very cynical time, there is great upbeat love song included "An Offer She Couldn't Refuse" which will leave you with a good feeling. No Bobby Bare album would be complete without a nostalgia song and this one has "Send Tomorrow To the Moon". It will definitely bring a smile to your face.
This reissue includes four bonus tracks from the mid to late 60s. Remember "The Streets Of Baltimore"? It's here. Although many artists have recorded "Margie's At The Lincoln Park Inn", Bobby's version is the definitive one.
A great reissue! And remember import reissues don't stay in print that long.

For the music alone, this would be a 5 Star rating. However, the quality of the CD from the manufacturer is questionable. I received the CD promptly from Amazon, but it had a defect in the last song (skipping, loss of sound, and ultimate ejection from the player). There were no obvious defects (scratches, dirt, etc.). I contacted Amazon and they sent a replacement. It has the same exact issues at the same point of the same song. Obviously a bad burn from the manufacturer. Will probably try a third copy - if that is the same way I will give it up. If you can find a good copy, though, the music itself is great!!

As above... I think I love this one, ha ha. It's a birthday present so it still sealed...
BUT, I'm familiar with Mr Bare and Shel Silversteins music and so far I've never been disappointed...
