Ernie Ford, not just "The Real Thing," but "A Sure Thing",
By
This review is from: The Real Thing [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] (Audio CD)
I have been an avid collector of Tennessee Ernie's music most of my life (I'm 43) and have managed to collect all of his Capitol and Word recordings but a few.
"The Real Thing" CD is an exciting addition to my collection as this entire CD features Ernie's live cuts of music from his radio shows of the 1950's which have been previously unavailable...and up to this time, "heard only once...on the day it was broadcast". The music is a diverse grouping of styles that made Ernie so popular, it features: country songs like, "Take Me Back and Try Me One More Time"; pop songs like, "I Ain't Got Nobody"; love songs like, "The Real Thing" and "Jealous Heart"; novelty songs like, "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bobbling Along"; and blues songs like, "To Sad to Laugh and To Mean to Cry." The big diversity in Ernie's music style demonstrates how popular Ernie was and how he sought to appeal to his diverse and large listening audience during these radio programs. He appealed to so many folks he had to cover many genres. Ernie is backed up during these radio songs by his radio band, which features the legendary country steel guitar artist Speedy West. In addition, Ernie's commentary, jokes, and comments before and about each song is a part of what makes this CD a real treasure and, "THE REAL THING!"
