Jill scott is one artist that continues to put out solid music year after year. With her third release she continues this streak by displaying thoughtful lyrics, a beautiful voice, and some nice tracks. The tracks range from having a slight rock tinge to just relaxing smooth tracks. Since Jill just got divorced, I was worried that this album would be overwhelmed with depressing songs. This is not the case. You can tell it affected her but she still has a nice mix of lyrics and songs. Favorites for me on the album are "all I", "how it make you feel", and "the real thing". This is a very nice album, cop it.
In the day and age of you tube and other websites that feature videos I don't know if the dvd version of this album is worth it. If you can watch the videos anytime for free why buy a dvd of the videos?

I finally received my copy of Jill Scott's "The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3," and I have to say that it is the best album I have heard in the past year, with Musiq Soulchild's "Luvanmusic" coming in at a close second. This album is deep, moving, strong, building, and has the power to affect my mood in ways I didn't imagine.
The album is banging and hard-hitting. Although it contains less of the spoken word that listeners are accustomed to hearing from her, Scott surprises listeners by including several smooth raps as well as maintaining the story-telling aspects for which she is known. Musical arrangements manage to fuse jazz, funk, soul, and gospel roots seamlessly, and one song jumps to the next in logical progress. The interview Scott does on the bonus CD offers explanations to some of her songs (the soundbites that were on the sampler), and the video for "My Love" shows a vulnerable side to Jill (she starts to cry during her performance) that reminds fans she's willing to bear herself in ways that others artists cover in glitz and glam. While I like EVERY song on the album, some of my favorites include: "Wanna Be Loved," "How It Make You Feel," "My Love," and "Come See Me." A great buy, and something you'll be listening to for quite some time (just like her last albums)!

This album IS The Real Thing!,
This review is from: The Real Thing: Words And Sounds Vol. 3 [CD/DVD Combo] [Deluxe Edition] (Audio CD)
Let me start this review by saying: If you haven't purchased The Real Thing yet, do it now! It is such an amazing collection of Words and Sounds that Jill Scott is known for. The songs on this album are nothing short of classic Jill Scott music. With a newer, sexier, braver, more independent sound and voice, Jill has done it again. If you loved her first two albums, you will adore the growth heard on Volume 3. And if you're a newcomer, you're even better off because this album is nothing like what's being pushed out there - the lyrics are real, the music is real, and Jill Scott is The Real Thing. Enjoy this album as an affirmation of self and a true look into the soul of not only Jill Scott, but of the human spirit everywhere. The universal themes addressed are clearly seen from the start with "Let It Be", "The Real Thing", "Hate On Me", "Whenever You're Around", and "Wanna Be Loved." The sensual Jill Scott is heard with "Come See Me", "Crown Royal", "Epiphany", and "All I." And the soul-baring raw emotion of "My Love" cannot be matched. In order to answer the original question WHO IS JILL SCOTT? one must listen to the entire album to grasp the full experience of the BEAUTIFULLY HUMAN artist who has evolved into THE REAL THING. The quest is not over, but we are coming to an answer to that original question, and it can only be: Jill Scott.

The bonus songs are amazing, but the bonus material is lacking,

"The Real Thing" is an amazing album and it's a crime that the bonus songs found here were cut from the standard edition. Both are out of this world amazing. I've got some complaints about the deluxe edition though. First of all, only 5 of Jill's many music videos are included. Where's "Gettin' In the Way" or "Whatever" or even a live version of "You Got Me" with The Roots? Second, the documentary where Jil discusses the album and her life so far has been edited. I saw the original on youtube and it's longer than the one seen here. The deluxe edition could have been so much better. In conclusion, just download the extra songs and catch the full documentary on youtube.

she's on fire....from the beginning that starts w/Who is Jill Scott, to the Experience Jill Scott 826+, the classic Beautifully Human (by the way if anyone knows where the remix to Cross My Mind off of Beautifully Human can be found, please let a sista know) to Collaborations and now the noir comeback - The Real Thing.... The Real Thing reminds me alot of Who is Jill Scott as far as it's darkness....i love it, i cry to it('my love'), relax to it('only u, insomnia) i think as i listen to it(how it make u feel).... she is gifted w/knowing how to tap into the infinite possibilities that music and lyrics have to offer...and she delivers. Check out her latest, Jill Scott live in Paris...the deluxe version contains the live CD....alot of female artists have come out w/new projects this year...and uh....none of them, none of them holds a candle to this Sista! i can care less how they get to platinum status as fast as they are getting there...Hidden Beach needs to make a more greater effort to promote the music of This Jazzy, Hip-Hop, Opera-singing, Poetic, Rock Chick Diva!!!!!!! she badddd.....she supa-baddd....she has said, and i agree, that she got her Bruce Leroy on....she knows exactly who she is....The Real Thing....

This by far her best album..it covers everything that any person can emotionally feel about love and relationships...my fav track is the hypnotic, erotic, smoothly banging "Crown Royal"..I hope she does a longer version or a remix...I also like My Love, Come See Me, Epiphany, Insomnia, How it Make U Feel, Only U, When U Are Around, All I, Wanna Be Around, Breathe...Man did I just call out the whole album?...Oh well, as you can see, I like the whole album and if you get it, so will u...

To All Consumers Pondering, should I purchase or should I not purchase?
Jill Scott has done it again, and again.. and with the love of God will continue to be an inspiration to woman, especially those woman of color. I love her work so much that if another Jill fan "five finger discounts" my cd's, without fuss I replace it immediately! (haaa haaa) I have all of Jill's music and I am a true fan since 2000! Jill, I pray your strength in the Lord. Continue, on delivering music that can be felt. Your work is truly timeless. Signed Tamara, A Dedicated Fan of Good Music

Enjoyed the music CD. Disappointed in the DVD. I expected music videos of the new songs on the CD, not of songs from Ms. Scott's older CDs.
