Quartet with Eddie alternating clarinet & tenor, January 23, 2011
This review is from: Real Time (Audio CD)
Listening to an hour of Eddie Daniels in any setting is an uplifting experience. In this case, Daniels offers some of his warmest, sexiest playing alongside demonstrations that he can swing and bop with the best of them, on both clarinet and tenor sax. He's accompanied by bass, drums, and most notably, Chuck Loeb on guitar in these 1994 studio sessions, resulting in 11 tracks (clarinet on six, tenor on the other five). Daniels and Loeb do some hauntingly beautiful interpretations on the mellow side (check out Daniels' original tunes "Blue Bolero" and "Thad's Lament"), show they can swing on "Love Walked In" and "Tricotism," and shift into high gear for "Falling in Love With Love," "You Stepped Out of a Dream," and "Farrell."
Eddie Daniels' recording output has been consistently excellent, and this CD is no exception. It's a must for his fans, especially those who prefer an intimate setting. Those who are new to his work will find it a great introduction that prompts them to seek out more.
