This review is from: The Real Triumph of Japan: The Conquest of the Silent Foe (Paperback)
This book discusses the medical side of the Japanese during the Russo-Japanese War circa 1905.
I am not a student of that era, but I believe it has been called one of the first "modern wars". Anyway, the book describes the excellent medical attention given to the wounded and ill Japanese soldiers (and, by the way, their imperial Russian prisoners) and emphasises the need for cleanliness, enough nurses, quick medical attention, etc etc. I highly recommend it. Very easy to read, also. I think it influenced American medical improvements as regards the military. It supports the history of how Japan modernized itself in the late 1800s and early 1900s and became a legitimate world power. Remember, this is the first time in 'modern' history that an Asian power defeated a European power in war, decisively. My fascination also includes what went wrong w/ Japan later - i.e. WW2....somewhere between the great wars, Japan lost something if you consider her treatment of prisoners and her lack of emphasis on the wounded in WW2. Obviously all that is not covered in this book (it was written early 1900s), but any study of that subject should include this fine work. Could be a fine thesis for a military-medical history PhD candidate... --chem
