Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

In between the World Wars, America faced its own war—a war on crime. Prohibition engulfed America in violence and corruption. The gangsters believed they were Untouchable—beyond the reach of the law. Their ruthlessness struck fear in citizens from coast-to-coast. But a new breed of lawmen showed America how to fight back. They were The Real Untouchables: Eliot Ness, Melvin Purvis and Thomas E. Dewey. Their stories and those of the mobsters they conquered have become legends of American folklore. This groundbreaking series, narrated by James Woods, weaves beautifully shot dramatic re-enactments, rare archival footage and exclusive interviews to tell the real stories of the men who kept the American dream alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Showcases the crime fighting careers of Eliot Ness, December 13, 2001
This review is from: The Real Untouchables (DVD)
The Real Untouchables presents three outstanding productions showcasing the crime fighting careers of Eliot Ness, Melvin Purvis, and Thomas E. Dewey. Ably narrated by James Woods, and blending historical photos and newsreel clips, with commentaries by historians and family members, here are the authentic biographies of unusual men who rose to the occasion and fought against crime during the lawless years of Prohibition. Eliot Ness is best known for the fictional television series based on his "autobiography", a memoir that had a great deal of embellishment. He was a most remarkable man who was incorruptible and fearless in the face of Al Capone and Chicago's organized crime syndicates. Melvin Purvis was an FBI agent who tracked down some of the most notorious bank robber gangs to plague the Midwest. Thomas E. Dewey took on Lucky Luciano and the New York mafia families. The DVD format provides wide screen presentation, character profiles, production notes, chapter selection, as well as cast and crew profiles. The Real Untouchables is a very highly recommended addition to personal, school, and community library DVD collections.

This review is from: The Real Untouchables (DVD)
This is the most amateur production that I have seen regarding Organized Crime and the era of prohibition. It is historically inaccurate and poorly produced.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Real Untouchables - A View of the Dedicated, March 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Real Untouchables (DVD)
This documentary DVD is a very informative expose of the times of prohibition and what Elliot Ness was up aginst during those times. The details of the lives of the men it examines is worth the price of the video. This is not an exhaustive documentary of either side, but what it does cover is an education of what the federal government and in particular not one (Ness), but other dedicated crime fighters did to stop a real insideous infestation of crime in America. Check it out!
