Book Description

March 26, 2007
When 40-something Kate "Cyn" Francis changes her name, her hair color, and her age in order to snag a younger man on a Caribbean cruise, the last thing she expects is to fall overboard for a Cary Grant look-alike. Sandy Brown, 20-something and eager to get over a broken heart, is also looking for love. Millie Evans, having recently sold her publishing empire, is on a succession of one-week cruises, looking to reconnect with a past love. But this is no ordinary love boat. Three women, three generations, all connected in an unexpected way. And it's more than sharing the same motto that "real women wear red."

From the Author

If you enjoyed getting to know Cyn, Sally, and Millie in "Real Women Wear Red," I think you'll like Lucky, Copper, and Mona in "The Tom Jones Club."

More About the Author

Kathy Holmes often says that she was "Born in the City of Angels, raised on Walt Disney, and inspired by the dreams of both."

Maybe she should say something about being conceived in San Francisco, but it doesn't sound quite as poetic. She grew up halfway between Disneyland and the beach with influences from nearby Hollywood during the Mad Men era. No wonder there's usually some sort of retro scene in her writing.

Tantalized by the tropics since Adam Troy set sail on the Kon Tiki in James A. Michener's "Adventures in Paradise," Kathy has traveled to tropical destinations such as Hawaii, Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Asia Pacific. Eventually, she moved to Florida where she wrote and secured representation for Real Women Wear Red. She also wrote for Walt Disney World and the Orlando Sentinel.

After living in Florida, Las Vegas, and the Pacific Northwest, she's now returned to her native state of California.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Women, Really Great! October 3, 2007
Format:Paperback
Kate "Cyn" Francis is in a frump.

Unlucky at love, Cyn wonders if her second chance at love will ever come along. At forty five, it's been years since she's had a man in her bed and love in her heart. Her ex, a big fake, turned out to be more lust than love and Cyn wonders if love is possible for women over forty.

At the behest of her close friend Maggie, Cyn decides to take drastic action and change her life. Her old one sure isn't working for her. She dyes her hair, changes her name and her age and heads out on a Caribbean cruise. On a boat full of men, there's got to be one Mr. Right among them. Right?

Instead of Mr. Right, Cyn meets two other single women who are also looking for love: the beautiful Sandy Brown is traveling the cruise trying to mend her broken heart. Divorced and self-conscious, she is also looking for love, hoping that she can find someone to make her feel love again.

There's also Millie Evans. Having sold her publishing empire, Millie is on a succession of one week cruises looking to find her long lost love. A widow after losing her husband, Millie searches for the man she met years ago on a cruise. Even though it is an impossible task, Millie hopes to find the man she loved and walked away from.

When these three women board the S.S. Platinum Queen, they have no idea that their lives are about to change forever. They come together in a time of need for each of them and find each other. Before they can find love, however, they will have to learn to love themselves.

But, thankfully, there is nothing that can't be accomplished with friendship, more than a few martinis's and lots of red. A real woman does wear red after all....

I absolutely loved this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read! March 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This would be a good beach read. I liked the plot and the relationship aspects of the book, but I think the switching of characters needs to be better. I had to keep going back or wait until I got to a certain part of the chapter before I knew which character was "speaking". All in all I really enjoyed this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to love this.... January 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I truly was excited about this book. I am a beach lover, and love chic lit! I read, on average, 4-6 books a month. I am disappointed to say that this was one of the worst books I have read in awhile. I did finish it, and the only thing that prompted me to do so was the imagery and setting of this book. I will say that giving the setting, this book had possibilities to be great. Sadly, the author falls short in her descriptions, and does not make the scenery 'come alive' for the reader. I have been to the places she writes about, and she does not do them justice in any way. The style of her writing was simply boring, and at times quite choppy.
There are several characters to keep track of in this book, which in and of itself, should not be a problem. However, the way the author writes, I found myself paging back to see remind myself who I was reading about. Sigh....it was quite hard to follow.
Most times when reading chic lit, I am amused and look forward to what is going to happen next. I just did not get that feeling here, and found myself consistently looking to see how many pages were left so that I could move onto a more engaging book.

Again, this book has SUCH possibilities...it just falls flat...very flat. I gave to 2 stars ONLY because of the setting, otherwise it would have been a 1 star book. I am so disappointed!

I read this book back in the summer. I thoroughly enjoyed this book for a few reasons. I was expecting a very light entertaining read. What I got was light, entertaining, meaningful, and all around enjoyable. The ending for me was unexpected which added to my emjoyment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea March 8, 2012
By Vicki

This wasn't terrible and I'm sure there are plenty who will find this cute, charming, and endearing, but this just wasn't my thing. It felt like it was going for the "Sex and the City" type feel, but kind of fell through on that goal. I found myself rolling my eyes at certain parts, but I don't want to spoil anything for those who actually want to read and enjoy the book, I just thought some of it was kind of silly and the other parts just weren't compelling to me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing March 8, 2012
By Marilou
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was looking forward to "Real Women Wear Red" - I really needed to unwind & relax.
But I was disappointed.
The basic idea for the story was good, but the writing did not live up to it. There were too many unfinished situations. What happened with Maggie & Roger? Gigi involved? That made no sense. And why did a woman who comes across as intelligent keep following up anonymous notes?
There were several more leads in the book that were never developed properly, I won't detail any more as I do not want to spoil the book for others. Disappointing & frustrating, I finished the novel with more questions than answers. The author had too many possible plots & was unable to follow through on most of them.
I did award two stars, but as I remember the frustration, I am beginning to wonder if it should have been one.
My advice to the author would be: Your imagination & story lines are good, but please reduce the number of "plots" & develop thoroughly instead of leaving the reader waiting & wondering.
