Book Description

January 22, 2007
Real World Globalization is an essential guide to rapidly changing trends in global trade, investment, labor relations, and economic development. Its 74 articles provide jargon-free introductions to trade and financial institutions, work in the global economy, international debt, and global environmental, health, and resource issues. An extensive chapter on economic development critically analyzes neoliberal strategies in coutries from Mexico to China, and features a debate on the significance of rich nations' agricultural subsidies. The ninth edition is thoroughly revised, updated, and expanded - with over 40 new articles. It includes chapters on the political economy of war and imperialism, and on alternatives to neoliberalism. A new tenth chapter compiles Nick Thorkelson's "Comic Strips of Neoliberalism."

Editorial Reviews

Review

Real World Globalization is an indispensable tool for understanding the social impacts of the new global economy, both domestically and internationally, and is written in a language and style that's accessible yet without compromise of rigor or principle. --Gerald Sussman, Portland State University

As textbooks become more conservative and less topical, I find that Dollars & Sense readers are more useful than ever in my undergraduate classes. They are jargon-free, up-to-date, and inexpensive, as well as consistently and thoughtfully progressive. I recommend them highly. --Robin Hahnel, American University

The articles provide students with access to current economic issues, along with a progressive framework. The writing is always good. Students always find them to-the-point, and learn a lot from them. --Bill Ganley, State University of New York at Buffalo

This is a great book for anyone looking for concise, understandable literature on the economic and social issues surrounding globalization. The book is organized into specialized sections that have 6-10 articles about various topics related to the section. It is a great source for both beginners and advanced students of globalization.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh come on, April 2, 2009
This review is from: Real World Globalization: A Reader in Business, Economics and Politics, 9th Edition (Perfect Paperback)
This book might be for you, it was not for me. I suppose you should take the title literally. It is stock full of 'real world' data, i.e. everything bad thats happened in the world, and then they take some aspect of neoliberal policy to blame it on. My major concern is that it is completely lacking in any sort of theory, direct cause and effect relationships. But I give it two stars because it is stock full of discussions of happenings around the world, which can be interesting. But be forewarned, extremely biased against neoliberalism and the material doesn't even try to explain itself.
