A Spectacularly Useful Guide Book, September 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Real World Guide to Psychotherapy Practice (Hardcover)
Finally someone has compressed and added "real life" to psychoanalytic therory for beginning and more experienced practioners alike. The essays, edited by Sabo and Havens, are all eminently practical: how to work with clients/patients living in poverty; those who are chronically stressed; violent men; doing therapy in emergency situations and with those living in desperate circumstances. Plus great information on dealing with the managed care scenarios, new thoughts on helping borderline patients and forming therapeutic alliances -- all solid and eminently useful. A book I will read and use! So much literature in the mental health field is theoretically insightful but not applicable in everyday practice; this book is very welcome (and it has the classic Havens touch of teaching/encouraging greater clinical empathy in all one's work.)
