Book Description

1878585703 978-1878585707 July 1, 2008 25th
Real World Macro, 25th edition, is a lively, thought-provoking alternative to mainstream economics textbooks. Real World Macro asks the questions that standard textbooks try to avoid: What's so great about growth? Is unemployment "natural"? Why should inequality matter? Along with covering the basics--monetary and fiscal policy, productivity and investment, inflation and unemployment--Real World Macro includes a chapter on major controversies in macroeconomics, such as the legacy of Keynesianism in the United States and the basics of Marxist economic theory. It also takes a look at international trade and finance, covering such topics as the debt crisis and arguments for and against "free trade." The thoroughly updated and revised 25th edition contains new chapter introductions reviewing the concepts examined in each article, discussion questions relating them to a standard textbook, and new articles addressing the latest real world issues and controversies, including topics like the bursting of the housing bubble, the chaos in the banking industry, Social Security, offshoring, the impact of the declining dollar, and the persistence of the racial and gender gap in jobs and income.
While Real World Macro is a great supplement to any mainstream text, its articles have been keyed to David Colander's popular textbook, Economics, and its macroeconomics "split."

Editorial Reviews

Review

The principles of economics books (yes, even mine) tend to be on the dull side and leave aspects of the economy and economics unchallenged. Real World Macro and Real World Micro can spice up your course and lead students to ask the type of questions they should be asking. --David Colander, Middlebury College

Real World Macro's topical applications of macroeconomic analysis provide the clear, concise critical perspective lacking in most macroeconomics texts. --Richard D. Wolff, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

As textbooks become more conservative and less topical, I find that Dollars & Sense readers and books are more useful than ever in my undergraduate classes. They are jargon-free, up-to-date, and inexpensive--as well as consistently and thoughtfully progressive. I recommend them highly. --Robin Hahnel, American University

This review is from: Real World Macro: A Macroeconomics Reader from Dollars & Sense, 25th Edition (Perfect Paperback)
As I was taking a class on macro economics I was looking forward to reading about application of different theories and concepts and though I got a fair amount of that a good portion of this reader is very left leaning. It presents ideas to make america more socialist rather than present ideas that could improve the economy as well as uphold principles of liberty, freedom, and limited government. It's sad to me that something so liberal would be assigned to me in an American institution.
