A Real Return to Form, May 21, 2008

I've been a fan of these guys for a long time and was lucky enough to see them at Wave-Gotik Treffen in 2005 [I'd assumed they had broken up years before]. They played a few unfamiliar songs and I discovered they had released an album a few years earlier and were working on a new one [this]. The earlier release, Purification, was a hit and miss affair, with a lot of variety that rarely worked together. I am glad to report that this is a whole 'nuther beast - every song is well constructed and works within the context of the album to produce a work that is consistently good and great in parts.
The first couple of songs, Realism and Statik, are probably the stand-outs, although I also like Wired Hate. The sound is very modern, in the vein of Icon of Coil or even Suicide Commando, only with Steril's added guitar to give it more punch and their distinctive vocals to make it stand out from the crowd. For this kind of music, the CD artwork is very strange but don't be put off, this is a great EBM offering that deserves to be heard in clubs.
