5.0 out of 5 stars REALISTIC Is The Key!, December 26, 2005
By
Thomas Lee (Fort Myers, Florida) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Realistic HO Layout for Beginners: Step-By-Step Instructions for Building a Complete HO Scale Layout (Model Railroader) (Paperback)
Lou Sassi is a master model railroader and this is a excellent place for beginners to start their initiation into the hobby. If you just yearn to put down an oval of track and run trains (which IS great fun!), you don't need to buy this book. If, on the other hand, you've been captivated by photos of super realistic layouts and wished you knew someone who could help you get started on building one - this book will be worth every penny you pay for it. If you don't know what "L Girder" benchwork is or why you might want to use it, Lou will tell you what, why, and how to do it. If you marvel at ground cover that looks more like an aerial photograph than a model, Mr. Sassi will show you how it's done. Even the beginner can do this. Each phase of construction contains photos, detailed lists of tools and materials, and step-by-step instructions. While it may seem complicated in its entirety (the mark of a realistic model)the individual skills are really easy for the beginner to grasp. This is a really useful book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beginners Layout ? I think not........, December 26, 2006
This review is from: A Realistic HO Layout for Beginners: Step-By-Step Instructions for Building a Complete HO Scale Layout (Model Railroader) (Paperback)
Much to complex to warrant being called a beginner's layout. This author has numerous books out with similar themes, and while he is an excellent modeler, he should not be writing books "for beginnners" in the hobby.

Unless you:

- are retired.
- and wealthy,

don't bother with this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too complicated, October 24, 2005
This review is from: A Realistic HO Layout for Beginners: Step-By-Step Instructions for Building a Complete HO Scale Layout (Model Railroader) (Paperback)
I found this book to be much to detailed for beginners. I was looking for something that was more along the lines of "model railroading for dummies".
