Overprep but smart and very helpful,
This review is from: 15 Realistic Tests for the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test Extended and Revised 3rd Edition (Paperback)
This book makes you feel as if you are about to have a heart attack while doing the tests. But on the test day you feel very confident when you see the real questions and you start to ask yourself, "Hey, will the hard questions ever show up?" Your scores and timing should not discourage you while doing the tests in this book (my highest score was 680 but I still managed to get my 800). Here is a hint, the easy questions in this book are the standard ones you will be seeing in the real test. There will be only two - three questions similar to the ones in this book. Nevertheless, my advice is to go over all questions and their solutions. And, the way this book overpreps you is better than other's, especially the Barron's one.

Want a high score? You still might not want this book,

The fact that this book contains a formidable 15 exams, dwarfing its competitors in the sheer number of tests offered, alone makes this book a valuable purchase for somebody seeking a VERY high score on the Math IIC. If your target score is not above a 750, this is not the book for you. I am a very good math student and could not finish a single exam, and my highest score was a 700 flat. I highly recommend buying this book in tandem with Kaplan Math IIC. Kaplan is notoriously easier than Barrons or Princeton (neither of which are as hard as this). Do as many Meylani tests as you can, then with 5 days before the exam, do a few Kaplan exams to get your confidence up, as Kaplan is largely accurate to the actual exam. Using the Meylani was very helpful to me, and made the actual exam seem significantly easier than it would have been otherwise.

Excellent preparation,

"Realistic" isn't the right word the describe the tests though they prepare you very well for the actual exam and fifteen practice exams are more than enough; I didn't even do half of them. So, in a way, I got more than what I wanted (which is a good thing!). The exam questions from this book are much more difficult than the actual exam even though the types of questions are very similar. Because of their difficulty, those exams are very good for preparing you for the actual exam. Don't expect to finish all the questions on one exam within the time limit, and don't expect to even do some of the questions (some of them are too difficult and just unnecessary). However, after doing these practices tests, you will definitely improve your timing and precalculus problem solving skills. Your score on these sample tests will most likely be significantly lower than your actual score (around a hundred point difference). I highly recommend this book if you are planning to score higher than 700 on the test. Otherwise, you are probably better off getting a less challenging book.

There are 15 tests in this book, they are hard but they have prepared me very well for the real test.

Most materials in the test are not necessary for you to know if you want to take SAT. You don't need the sheer frustration of going through this book without knowing how to do a single problem. Well, that was a little exaggerated, but honestly, I don't think it's a good prep book for SAT, since the difficulty level and the complexity of the problems are much higher than you'll see in SAT II math, thus makes it very unrealistic and useless. I used this book, along with Kaplan and Baron for my SAT prep. Tho I got 800 on SAT II Math, I don't think my success has much to do with this book.

Great Training,
This review is from: 15 Realistic Tests for the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test Extended and Revised 3rd Edition (Paperback)
This book was somewhat accurate (harder). Barron's was most accurate for Math Level 2, but Meylani's was definitely great training. First, there are fifteen practice tests, more than you will find anywhere else. Also, because this book is slightly harder than the actual exam, it helps with time management and efficiency. You'll definitely feel much more comfortable on test day.
I recommend using Meylani's in the middle of your preparation. Warm up and make sure you know your basics with Princeton Review and Barron's. Meylani's will help apply this knowledge to difficult tests. Don't be discouraged by scores on Meylani's exam. For a confidence booster, especially right before test day, do a practice test or two from one of your warm up books. In my opinion, the questions marked as more difficult were not necessarily so. It really depends on the individual. Also, some of the solutions are very short and don't explain much, so if you are not naturally inclined towards math, it may take a while to understand, especially since the problems are already harder. In addition, the distribution of topics (i. e. number of problems per topic) is not realistic, so again, make sure you get the basics for the SATII Math Level 2 test down first. With math, often you just have to do problems, and Meylani's provides that opportunity. If you can get a decent score on Meylani's, your actual score will exceed expectations. Also, I was able to get my book for a good price and great quality.

This book will prepare you so well for the test...,
This review is from: 15 Realistic Tests for the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test Extended and Revised 3rd Edition (Paperback)
Practicing with this book and Barron's prep book is essential. With the right calculator (for me a TI-89 Titanium) your practice scores will improve and the actual test will seem too easy.
The questions in this book are so much harder than on the actual exam, so don't get discouraged; it's better in the long run. I got so frustrated when I started by getting low 500s on the first couple in this book. Over time I improved, and in all honesty, this book got me an 800 on the College Board test itself. The explanations in the back aren't entirely helpful, but if you look at back at ALL your mistakes and study pretty much every topic in the tests you've taken, you're guaranteed a score in the high 700s, or else 800.

i am typically pretty good at math, but this book was absolutely ridiculously hard. the tests are nothing like the real thing and some questions are impossible to do because they lack drawings. i bought this book because of its high ratings, but WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY.

This book is plain bad.,
This review is from: 15 Realistic Tests for the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test Extended and Revised 3rd Edition (Paperback)
This book is plain bad - the English is horrible on word problems, necessary parts of drawings are left out, etc.
Do not buy this book - you will be much better off with one from a reputable publisher who EDITS their publications.

This book over-prepares you for SAT Math IIc. You do not need to finish the whole book in order to get 800.
If you prepare for AMC and other math competitions, you may want to pick the hardest problems in this book. Enjoy them! |
