Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reS-Gr 2-Sally hates having her hair brushed and fusses so much that her mother gives up. Her tresses get snarlier and snarlier until a kite becomes caught in them and the girl and her dog float up into the sky, ensnaring butterflies, a bird's nest, an old man's cane, and other items as they go along. All ends well as Sally's mother saves the day, and the child finally decides to let her mother comb her locks. The oversized book is overflowing with Ward's colorful illustrations-her art is somewhat akin to that of Mary Engelbreit, full of bright shades and designs, but in this case, not really well controlled. There is so much going on that the pages seem cluttered, and it is difficult to distinguish the main characters. Relative proportions are not observed, so that Sally's mother is smaller than Sally and her dog is almost as big as she is. Little poems are tucked into the corners of some pages; small signs and objects are everywhere; the fonts of the text change size arbitrarily, resulting in a rather bewildering effect. Natasha Tarpley's I Love My Hair (Little, Brown, 1998) is more imaginative.

More About the Author

I was lucky to have grown up in the country where every day was an adventure. There was a creek full of suckers; pastures full of cows and fields full of hay and corn. Best of all there was a chicken coop which had been gutted and then filled with the remains of a one-room schoolhouse. This included desks, chalkboards, and boxes of books. My cousins and I spent hours in that old coop-playing, pretending, reading books-and in my case-writng. My favorite authors remain Laura Ingalls Wilder and Louisa May Alcott.

My heartwarming Christmas story for adults entitled, "The Reindeer Keeper" was released October, 2010. It continues to receive great reviews from readers and reviewers and was honored as a "Mom's Choice Awards Gold Recipient in Adult Fiction" in August, 2011.

I've been published in Highlights For Children, McCall's, Ladies' Home Journal, and the Chicken Soup for the Soul book entitled, "Christmas Magic" (10/11). In March, 2012, my short story, "A Brown Boy of Our Own", will be included in the Chicken Soup for the Soul book, "Family Caregivers." My story, "Over Coffee" was published as an eKindle book, 12/10 and my short story, "Sleigh Bells Ring Again" was included in the Christmas ekindle book collection, "Christmas Warmth."
I've written/illustrated three children's picture books centered around my original character, Snarly Sally.

My children and I LOVE this wonderful, imaginitive story. Snarly Sally and her dog Tangles are so adorable; they have become part of our night time reading ritual. We are looking forward to more fun adventures with these two very special characters!
