This review is from: Realms of Arkania II: Star Trail (CD-ROM)
Star Trail is the second of a series of three games taking place in the Realms of Arkania. There are quite a few features in this game that make this game a timeless classic, easily competing with today's RPGs in terms of entertainment. This game has incredible detail imbued with a good amount of humor and a large dosage of entertainment.
The short story is that you create, the hard or easy way, between 1-6 characters (or use the ones provided to you from the game) to travel the countryside in the background of a major invasion by the usual suspects, i.e. Orcish Horde. You are searching for the Star Trail, a special weapon for some thief god. I do not quite remember the details.
After the introduction, you are pretty much left to your own devices. I spent most of my time wandering around, killing monsters, getting cash, and drinking a lot of alcohol. Some of the dialog and descriptions are hilarious, such as when sleeping with prostitutes (just a text box appears), haggling women selling amulets, or doing the same boring dance in the pub.
Aside from the witty dialog is an intriguing storyline revolving around such issues such as racism, war, and betrayal. The less dramatic details would be the attention paid to items/weapons/skills you acquire/steal during your adventures. The skills are particularly interesting, because they not only include useful things, but negative traits such as claustrophobia, etc. These traits can negatively affect your character. Nothing more frightful to a person with a high necrophobia trait than having to do battle with the undead.
If you have a system that can handle this sort of game (since most computers nowadays are too advanced for this game), pick this one up. If you like RPGs, you will not be disappointed.
