More About the Author

I've been writing fantasy for more than thirty years... well, my fantasy's been published for more than thirty years. I've been writing it since I was eight. It's what I always wanted to do for a living, and I've been very fortunate in that I've been able to manage that. I try to write fantasy with an element of common sense to it -- not so much mythic archetypes as sensible people.

Other than my job, my life's pretty ordinary -- a nice house in a quiet neighborhood, a wife, two grown kids, and a cat.

Yaay! After so many years, a sequel to Nightside City. The sequel deals with a lot of the hanging questions left unresolved in Nightside City, involving mostly the same characters. We get to meet Carlisle's family in this one, and find out a bit more about the interplanetary economy of Watt-Evans' universe. Given the ending of this book, another sequel doesn't seem likely though.

Do not buy this book if you have not already read Nightside City. It won't make any sense on its own.

Considering that the book is self-published, the editorial quality is excellent; you can tell how many years of writing experience Watt-Evans has.

Lawrence Watt-Evans is better known for his fantasy stories, but he has written several science fiction stories as well (Nightside City, Denners Wreck & Shining Steel) as well as several hybrid fantasy/science fiction.. Realms of Light is a sequel to Nightside City. In many ways all of his novels are science fiction, even his fantasy stories are populated with very rational characters and systems of behavior. In my view most of his fantasy is set up by establishing axioms of how things work, populating it with a variety of characters who have their own self interest, and letting them go.

In this novel Carlisle Hsing is given a job offer she can't refuse, and which lets her also satisfy some of her personal goals. The novel is a little heavy on the coincidence of the main plotline and her personal goals, but certainly not unforgivably so. This is a quick, and entertaining read. I recommend reading Nightside City prior to reading this novel however. (Conveniently available on Kindle as well). Of course I recommend every one of his novels, even they are all worth reading.

Have read this several times and it's a worthy follow up to one of my very favorite books, Nightside City. It was great to revisit the character and imaginative setting. Here's hoping for more books from Mr. Watt-Evans!
