You have to really be into computer gaming to enjoy this. I'm not.

Terrible book. All the characters are pretty much the same- cool, collected, hyper-aware geniuses.
The writing style is tedious. a fight scene can go on for a hundred pages describing exactly where someone placed his foot, how he twisted his arm, what the door knob felt like in his hand at this particular time of day.
The author has slim to no knowledge at all on the matters at hand.
The plot is a ridiculous collection of coincidences and unbelievable events.
Your better of reading a James Bond book.

Great start, with an elaborate multiplayer online game that even I could follow and get interested in, and I think he may have been trying to draw a parallel between the behaviors in the game and the behaviors of the "real" people in the second half, where the whole thing turns into a sort of James Bond thriller that depends on an unending series of major coincidences and perfect alignments of the planets. But it felt like he tired himself out with all the work of getting all the characters into the same place at the same time and he forgot what the point of the story was. Love Stephenson. But not so much in this book.

Brilliant as always. Crisp writing. Fast paced and supremely edgy. Gifted writer. Wish that this outcome was as satisfactory in real life. Now tempted to find a game as good as T'Rain. Five Stars a must

Stephenson is an odd guy who takes on very unusual settings. Despite the length, this was a great read and I recommend it highly.

A bit slow to start, but man, once it gets going what a thrill ride! Those looking for classic Stephenson may be disappointed with the lighter, action-thriller style of this book, but it stands on it's own merits as long as your expectations are in check from the start.

A thrilling, unstoppable read. Feels half the length it is because it flies by so fast. Wonderful character development of a huge cast. Thoroughly recommended.

It starts slowly, and is probably too long, but it's worth the ride. The switching between real and virtual worlds is intriguing, and the warmth of relationships among flawed but loving people leaves a nice aftertaste.

I am a huge fan of Neal Stephenson. That said, this book just dragged on for way too long.
