Book Description

June 1987
It has ended. It begins again. In Kavelin, Lady Nepanthe''s new life with the wizard Varthlokkur is disturbed by visions of her lost son, while King Bragi Ragnarson and Michael Trebilcock scheme to help the exiled Princess Mist re-usurp her throne - under their thumb. In Shinsan, a pig-farmer''s son takes command of Eastern Army, while Lord Kuo faces plots in his council and a suicide attack of two million Matayangans on his border. But in the desert beyond the Dread Empire, a young victim of the Great War becomes the Deliverer of an eons-forgotten god, chosen to lead the legions of the dead. And the power of his vengeance will make a world''s schemes as petty as dust, blown wild in the horror that rides the east wind. This volume marks the beginning of the end. Reap the East Wind is the first step on the road to the long-delayed final chapter of Glen Cook''s legendary Dread Empire series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back to the Dread Empire, October 19, 1997

This review is from: Reap the East Wind (Dread Empire Series) (Paperback)
This self-contained volume picks up four years after the original Dread Empire series ended. The characters are still recovering from the devestating war that finished All Darkness Met. This time, Cook tells his story from the point of view of both of the former warring sides. Most of the book deals with a sub-plot outside of the main series story-line. RTEW is a must read for fans of the original trilogy, and also worth reading for those unfamiliar with it, since it has many references to those first books. It was the first I read, and it left me determined to find the others!

4.0 out of 5 stars 6th dread empire book, very good for sequel, August 3, 2006

This review is from: Reap the East Wind (Dread Empire Series) (Paperback)
this story picks up a few years after the end of the first dread empire trilogy. It deals with the fate of Mocker's son Ethrian and in great detail with the dread empire and efforts of mist to regain her throne in that place. As usual, excellent brutally realistic characterization of primary and secondary characters as is cook's trademark.

Unfortunately this second trilogy had the third book's manuscript stolen from cook's house and was never published, thus ths story continued in An Ill Fate Marshalling has never had a published conclusion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Workmanlike but worthwhile, October 23, 2011

Originally written in the late 1980's, this is the start of the final sequence of "Dread Empire" novels, which is at last being completed after more than 20 years. The plot is set a few years after the end of the events of A Cruel Wind, with 3 storylines all apparently disparate weaving together by story's end. Arguably, the protagonist is Ethrian, grandson of Varthlokkur, son of Nepenthe and Mocker. But that is only because he is central to all that is going on, with King Bragi, Mist and Tervola all having a share of screen time.

There are plots and counterplots, people doing stupid things for human reasons, and a new power rising in the east (hence the title). Kavelin is maintaining a wary watchfulness, the Dread Empire is stirring, but what is going on within kingdoms - the internal power struggles - is at least as important as the "big picture".

This isn't Cook's best work, but its by no means bad. While the characters are not as engaging as Garrett or Croaker (or even Mocker), there is a directness to this in the telling that is refreshing, and the book moves fast and never slows up.

The rest of this final chapter of the saga is being published by Night Shade over late 2011/early 2012, with an all-new rewritten ending - A Path to Coldness of Heart - after the original ending (The Wrath of Kings) was stolen in manuscript back in the late 80's. Who knows what comes next - maybe the last two Black Company novels?
