One of the great metal canons of the '90s!,

The Reaper is one freakin' ferocious ripride through the veritable metal pantheon! I mean you don't get much better than this, boyz and goils. Slamming-guitar-wall-of-sound-hoochie-coochie-satan-loving-pure-lovin'-hot-oven-stuffin' pastry for the ears is the only way to describe it! Those vocals are restless and wild, Acceptable with a capital "A." Udo should be soooooooo proud. Grave Digger is your basic high-calorie, high-octane version of fellow Germanic metallers Accept except with more passion for complete metal domination and a more voracious appetite for destruction. Highly, highly recommended. A seriously evil metal platter that serves up fresh Lucifer pie with every joyous listen! -David J Newman 2003

WOW,

I was taken aback by this album, after purchasing "The Grave Digger", I didn't think Grave Digger was faster of heavier, boy was I wrong. I knew in the opening second slash like sound, I was in for a treat. A little history for the new people: This is the 1993 reformation album. Six years before(1987) Grave Digger put out a commercial album called "Stronger Than Ever" under the name Digger. Luckily it failed, but Chris declared the band dead. So, one song in, Grave Digger has definitely returned. From "Tribute to Death" to "Madness Continues" you're treated to a heavy bombardment of music. Very fast, very loud. A great addition for any metal fan. This band needs more exposure I mean they've been out since 1980, how many people listen to them? Try to pick up a copy today, if possible, since it's seems to have gone out of print JUST THIS WEEK!

The "Reaper" by Grave Digger is a powerful example of great Heavy Metal. This music could make you drive a hundred miles per hour, before you would realize it. If you looking for heavy and fast, but good sounding as well, this album is for YOU!!

Grave Digger's "The Reaper" is a great slice of heavy metal sound and fury. A longtime mainstay in the German metal scene, Grave Digger has been plugging away at it for almost 30 years now. They attempted to go mainstream in the 80's, a move which ended in failure. Lead vocalist Chris Boltendahl assembled a new form of the band and exploded back into existence with this album in 1993. "The Reaper" is extremely loud, fast, heavy, as well as technically impressive. Guitarist Uwe Lulis bangs out the riffs and solos up there with the best of them. The guitar sound is very solid and any metal guitar fan would smile in enjoyment. Tomi Gottlich competently holds up the low end on bass, while Jorg Michael bangs on the skins (drums) like any drummer in the metal genre should be able to do. Meanwhile, lead vocal man and band leader Chris Boltendahl sings with all his might. His voice is a great amalgamation of what you want in metal. It has the gruff growliness of death metal vocals, but at the same time it has an operatic volume that allows him to easily be understood by any listener.
The quality of the musicianship here lends itself well to an album that has this many tracks. Some are not as good as the rest, but most of it slays. The title track is an excellent and unrelenting way to let people know what Grave Digger is all about. Another choice track is "Legion of the Lost", a slower paced track about the French Foreign Legion. Altogether, every songs fits the mood of the album nicely, and this should satisfy any fan of traditional heavy metal. There is no other band like Grave Digger out there, and this disc is a great way to get into a band that is criminally underrated, undervalued, and just plain ignored by the metal community. Do yourself a favor if you like metal, and buy this disc. You'll become an instant Grave Digger fan and support the band's near 30 year mission to bring true metal to the fans who care about who and what they listen to. |
